Don
Phillips was in the Air Force at Las Vegas Air Force Base during an
event when UFOs were seen moving at enormous speeds near Mt. Charleston,
northwest of Las Vegas. In addition, he worked with Kelly Johnson at
the Lockheed Skunkworks -- on design and construction of the U-2 and
SR-71 Blackbird. He testifies that we not only have these
extraterrestrial devices, but have also achieved tremendous
technological advances from their study. He states that in the 1950's
and 1960's, NATO did research into the origin of ET races, and
disseminated reports to the leaders of various countries. He lists a few
of the technologies we were able to develop because of ETs: computer
chips, lasers, night vision, and bulletproof vests. Mr. Phillips now
develops technologies that can help eliminate environmental pollutants
and reduce the need for fossil fuels.

Δημοσιεύθηκε στις 19 Φεβ 2013

The centuries-old quest for other
worlds like our Earth has been rejuvenated by the intense excitement
surrounding the discovery of hundreds of planets orbiting other stars.
The challenge now is to find terrestrial planets, especially those in
the habitable zone of their stars where liquid water might exist on the
surface of the planet. The Kepler mission, which launched in March 2009,
is specifically designed to survey our region of the Milky Way galaxy
to discover Earth-size and smaller planets in or near the habitable zone
and determine the fraction of the hundreds of billions of stars in our
galaxy that might have such planets. To date, 61 Kepler planets have
been confirmed and more than 2,300 planet candidates have been found.
This talk will cover many of Kepler's discoveries, including several
planets orbiting two stars, and will try to explain how Kepler's
discoveries help define humanity's place in the universe.

Photosynthetic
microbial mats are complete microbial ecosystems that can construct
laminated "miniature reefs" called stromatolites. Their fossilized
equivalents are among the oldest most abundant evidence of early life.
Dr. Des Marais and his colleagues have studied cyanobacterial mats in an
arid coastal environment at the Exportadora de Sal, S.A. (ESSA) salt
works, Guerrero Negro, Baja California Sur, Mexico. He will show how the
mats' oxygenated zone reflects a dynamic balance between vigorous
photosynthetic O2 production and O2 consumption by diverse
sulfide-oxidizing and heterotrophic bacteria.

Anoxygenic
phototrophs and sulfate-reducing bacteria are quantitatively important
consumers of dissolved organic matter. He will show how several
previously unknown rRNS gene sequences of bacteria and eukarya were
identified, indicating that these mats can extend our understanding of
the diversity and early evolution of benthic microbial communities. He
continues to catalog the diversity of lipid biosignatures, whose fossil
equivalents can record the diversity of ancient microbial ecosystems.

An Asteroid with Rings?

An Asteroid with Rings?

Δημοσιεύθηκε στις 28 Μαρ 2014

From ESO, observations made at
telescopes in South America have made the surprise discovery that the
remote asteroid Chariklo is surrounded by two dense and narrow rings.
This is the smallest object to have rings and only the fifth body in the
Solar System — after the much larger planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus
and Neptune — to have this feature. The origin of these rings remains a
mystery, but they may be the result of a collision that created a disc
of debris.

The rings of Saturn are one of the most spectacular
sights in the sky, and less prominent rings have also been found around
the other giant planets. Despite many careful searches, no rings had
been found around smaller objects orbiting the Sun in the Solar System.
Now observations of the distant minor planet Chariklo as it passed in
front of a star have shown that this object too is surrounded by two
fine rings.

Chariklo is the largest member of a class known as
the Centaurs and it orbits between Saturn and Uranus in the outer Solar
System. The astronomers found much more than they were expecting. A few
seconds before, and again a few seconds after the main occultation there
were two further very short dips in the star's apparent brightness.
Something around Chariklo was blocking the light! By comparing what was
seen from different sites the team could reconstruct not only the shape
and size of the object itself but also the shape, width, orientation and
other properties of the newly discovered rings.

The team found
that the ring system consists of two sharply confined rings only seven
and three kilometres wide, separated by a clear gap of nine kilometres —
around a small 250-kilometre diameter object orbiting beyond Saturn.

The
rings may prove to be a phenomenon that might in turn later lead to the
formation of a small moon. Such a sequence of events, on a much larger
scale, may explain the birth of our own Moon in the early days of the
Solar System, as well as the origin of many other satellites around
planets and asteroids.

Robin Dunbar
March 12, 2014

Social
media promises us an ever-expanding circle of friends, but that may be
an empty promise. Social behavior is firmly rooted in biology, and our
brains are hard-wired to maintain meaningful relationships with only
about 150 people. Evolutionary psychologist Robin Dunbar formulated
"Dunbar's Number" to measure the cognitive limit of our social circles
-- Facebook "friends" and Twitter "followers" notwithstanding. Dunbar
will explore how our brains have evolved to support the complex social
structures that ensure our survival, and how the size of those groups is
defined by our DNA, suggesting real limits not only to our personal
relationships, but to the size and capacity of every community in which
we participate.

In space no-one can hear you
scream... but it is still a noisy Universe. We are familiar with the
many stunning images of space, but these are only part of the whole
human experience. This lecture takes a new approach to appreciating the
Universe, through the vehicle of sound. Once we understand how sound is
propagated, we can look at the how and where it can exist in space. We
examine how sound can be a diagnostic of cosmic phenomena (such as the
song of the Sun and distant stars), the way it can carry energy across
vast volumes of space (away from a black hole humming in B♭), how it can
be a useful way to illustrate processes in astronomy (such as the rapid
spin of pulsars, and other more local radio emissions) and how it is
ultimately responsible for the growth of all structure we see today in
the cosmos.

Kepler data indicate that there are
many planets that could be Earthlike in the sense of having a similar
bulk composition. I will explain why such planets are unlikely to be
Earthlike in other respects, especially if they are superEarths (three
or so Earth masses or more). There are three main points here: (1)
SuperEarths will not separate core from mantle because they are likely
to be so hot internally that the critical temperature is reached for
miscibility of iron alloy and silicate material. (2) Earth is (so far as
we know) special in having a water budget that (expressed as an ocean)
corresponds to water depths ~ mountain heights.(3) The surface will be
hot either from a massive atmosphere or proximity to the parent star.

Cosmic Journeys - The Search for Earth-like Planets

Δημοσιεύθηκε στις 24 Μαρ 2014

Get the latest from the
planet-hunting frontier. Find out what we are learning about our place
in the cosmos from the search for earth-like planets.

This
journey started tens of thousands of years ago, when humans began to fan
out across the planet, following unknown pathways, crossing unmeasured
distances. We traced coastlines, and sailed uncertain seas. We crossed
ocean straits drained by an ice age.

Into every corner of Earth
we ventured, looking for places to put down our roots, to raise our
families, or just to see what was there. Today, it's the final frontier
that fires our imaginations. With so many stars in our galaxy, we make a
simple extrapolation, that the cosmos must be filled with worlds like
ours, with life, even intelligent life.

For four years, the
historic planet hunting mission, Kepler, starred at a group of 150,000
stars located in a region extending three thousand light years away from
earth.

The data collected by this spacecraft has brought a
turning point in the long search for other planets like earth. Is ours
one of countless life-bearing worlds strewn about the galaxy; or is it a
rare garden of eden in a barren universe?

Abstract:
When
Galileo Galilei pointed his telescope toward Jupiter in 1609 and
discovered what we now call the Galilean moons, he did not realized that
he had just established a new research field in astronomy. In the past
four centuries, planetary astronomy, the study of our solar system
bodies using telescopes, has increased our knowledge of the environment
of Earth, the evolution of the planets, the origin of comets and
asteroids and the formation of our solar system. Space exploration
accelerated planetary astronomy in the 1960s by allowing planetary
scientists to access in-situ and detailed data. In this talk, I will
discuss the contributions of telescopic observation over the past 50
years to planetary science, particularly the recent developments like
adaptive optics which renewed interest in ground-based observations of
planets. I will explore the contribution of all-sky surveys like
Pan-STARRS and LSST, which provide several terabytes of data a week,
changing radically the way we do astronomy. Looking to the future of
space-based astronomy, I will consider whether the James Webb Space
Telescope and ATLAST are potential successors to the successful Hubble
Space Telescope. Finally I'll explore the way in which specialized
low-cost telescopes designed to search and study exoplanets, planets
around other stars, constitutes a paradigm shift in our field.

the world embody beautiful ideas? This is a question that people have
thought about for a long time. Pythagoras and Plato intuited that the
world should embody beautiful ideas; Newton and Maxwell demonstrated how
the world could embody beautiful ideas, in specific impressive cases.
Finally in the twentieth century in modern physics, and especially in
quantum physics, we find a definitive answer: Yes! The world does embody
beautiful ideas.

In this special lecture hosted by the
Institute's School of Mathematics, Frank Wilczek presents the
intellectual history of this question and discusses how esthetic
considerations continue to guide our search for ultimate physical laws.

NASA | The Mystery of Dark Energy

NASA | The Mystery of Dark Energy

Δημοσιεύθηκε στις 1 Ιαν 2014

In 1998, two groups presented
startling evidence that the expansion of the universe is accelerating,
and the term "dark energy" was coined as a label for the cause of the
acceleration. What is the nature of this mysterious component that we
now believe makes up more than 70 percent of the energy density of the
universe? What types of evidence for dark energy are there, and how
solid is it? What techniques will yield better answers? What are the
next steps? These are a few of the questions that have captured the
attention of cosmologists as well as the general public. This talk will
attempt to explain the questions and a few of the answers.

Quantum Mechanics vs. General Relativity - It's a Dark Matter

Quantum Mechanics vs. General Relativity - It's a Dark Matter

Δημοσιεύθηκε στις 6 Ιαν 2014

The Dark Side of Time - Is space-time fragmented, segmented into quantized bits of information, or causal sets?

Or is space-time smooth and continuous, with curves, bends, and warps; just as Einstein had predicted?

Is
what we call space-time even part of objective reality or is it just a
mathematical construct that appeals to our perceptions?

The
answer could be all of the above depending on our frame of reference.
When we apply Temporal Mechanics to Physics, it appears that there are
underlying aspects to Relativity that subtly show up in Quantum
Mechanics as extra dimensions of time.

Obsolete points-of-view
regarding the nature of time and relative frames of reference may be at
the center of the mismatch between Quantum Mechanics and General
Relativity.

Most physics theories tend to have a unique premise
in common: one time dimension. In fact, there is a growing consensus
that time is just an illusion.

Yet, applying extra dimensions to
time can successfully modify modern physics without violating the
conservation laws long held to be true. Modern notions of quantum
gravity and curved space-time can successfully be replaced with an
infinitude of relative frames of reference, progressing and regressing
though infinite series of relations, which imply the existence of
multidimensional time.

Secrets of the Sun / Nova HD 1080p

Δημοσιεύθηκε στις 1 Ιουν 2013

It contains 99.9 percent of all the
matter in our solar system and sheds hot plasma at nearly a million
miles an hour. The temperature at its core is a staggering 27 million
degrees Fahrenheit. It convulses, it blazes, it sings. You know it as
the sun. Scientists know it as one of the most amazing physics
laboratories in the universe. Now, with the help of new spacecraft and
Earth-based telescopes, scientists are seeing the sun as they never have
before and even recreating what happens at its very center in labs here
on Earth.
