25 Most Bizarre Galaxies In The Universe

25 Most Bizarre Galaxies In The Universe

Δημοσιεύτηκε στις 28 Απρ 2016

Our
universe is both massive and fascinating. While we have a pretty
elevated view of ourselves as humans, whenever we peer into the cosmos
we really see how small we are in compared to the rest of whats out
there. The lowest astronomical figures say there are 100 billion
galaxies (that's 100,000,000,000) in the universe, and our Milky Way is
only one. Take the Earth - and multiply it times 17 billion. That's how
many Earth-sized worlds exist only in the Milky Way Galaxy. Multiply
that times 100 billion galaxies and you have a massive universe, not
even counting the stars and non-Earth-sized planets. Here, we focus on
some of the most amazing aspects of our universe: galaxies. The masses
of stars, planets, debris, dark matter, and more follow some general
patterns but sometimes even they break tradition and amaze us, earning
them a spot on this list of the strangest and most bizarre galaxies in
the universe.

Most of the strange galaxies on this list are known
to astronomers by two classifications: the Messier catalog or the New
General Catalog. Messier's catalog was compiled in 1771 by French
astronomer Charles Messier as a way to organize the host of cosmic
discoveries happening at the time. A particular fan of comets, Messier
made the list with his assistant Pierre Méchain to filter out non-comet
items. The New General Catalog (NGC) of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars is
a collection of various types of deep sky objects compiled by John
Louis Emil Dreyer. Numerous revisions have cleaned up the listing, now
one of the most comprehensive catalogs to date with 7,840 deep space
objects.

From a galaxy which resembles a cosmic sunflower
unfolding before our eyes to a hellish-looking mass of gas and matter to
violent galactic collisions which seem oh-so-peaceful in still images,
here are the 25 Most Bizarre Galaxies in the Universe.

Mathematics, Measurement and Money - Professor Norman Biggs

Mathematics, Measurement and Money - Professor Norman Biggs

An overview of Mathematics, Measurement and Money and their evolution over time http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and...

THE JOINT LONDON MATHEMATICAL SOCIETY/ GRESHAM COLLEGE ANNUAL LECTURE

Throughout
its brief history, mathematics has been closely linked with measurement
and money. In the ancient settlements the rules of arithmetic and
geometry were used to solve problems about the allocation of food and
resources. When life became more complex, the use of coined money led to
computational problems that required good algorithms for their
solution.

Nowadays we rely on mathematics for security, and the
links between information and money have become blurred. Can mathematics
keep us safe?

The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and...

Gresham
College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition
continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being
made available for free download from our website. There are currently
over 1,900 lectures free to access or download from the website.

Ripples In Space: Gravitational Waves in Our Future

Ripples In Space: Gravitational Waves in Our Future

Ζωντανή μετάδοση στις 17 Ιουν 2016

After
decades of effort, the era of gravitational wave astronomy is finally
here. Ground-based instruments like LIGO have opened up humanity's ears
to the ripples of spacetime.

But the LIGO results represent just
one slice of the gravitational wave spectrum. There is a lower-frequency
rumble in spacetime that requires a space-based instrument to hear.

This
Hangout will feature a discussion of LISA Pathfinder, a mission led by
the European Space Agency with contributions from several European
Member States and NASA, which seeks to demonstrate the technologies
needed to build a space-based gravitational wave observatory.

Paul
McNamara of ESA and Ira Thorpe of NASA will explain the exciting first
results from LISA Pathfinder, which were published and announced on June
7th.

Δημοσιεύτηκε στις 30 Ιουν 2016

During
a news briefing from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena,
California the science team involved with the Juno mission to Jupiter
talked about the scientific goals of the mission. This Fourth of July,
the solar-powered Juno spacecraft will arrive at our solar system’s most
massive planet after an almost five-year journey. Once in Jupiter’s
orbit, the spacecraft will circle the Jovian world 37 times during 20
months, skimming to within 3,100 miles (5,000 kilometers) above the
cloud tops. This is the first time a spacecraft will orbit the poles of
Jupiter, providing new answers to ongoing mysteries about the planet’s
core, composition and magnetic fields.

The Mind After Midnight: Where Do You Go When You Go to Sleep?

The Mind After Midnight: Where Do You Go When You Go to Sleep?

Δημοσιεύτηκε στις 18 Μαρ 2015

We
spend a third of our lives asleep. Every organism on Earth—from rats to
dolphins to fruit flies to microorganisms—relies on sleep for its
survival, yet science is still wrestling with a fundamental question:
Why does sleep exist? During Shakespeare and Cervantes' time, sleep was
likened to death, with body and mind falling into a deep stillness
before resurrecting each new day. In reality, sleep is a flurry of
action. Trillions of neurons light up. The endocrine system kicks into
overdrive. The bloodstream is flooded with a potent cocktail of
critically vital hormones. Such vibrant activity begs the question:
Where do we go when we go to sleep? Based on new sleep research, there
are tantalizing signposts. We delved into the one-eyed, half-brained
sleep of some animals; eavesdropped on dreams to understand their
cognitive significance; and investigated extreme and bizarre sleeping
behaviors like “sleep sex” and “sleep violence.”

The Science of Sleep: Melatonin to Neural Pathways

The Science of Sleep: Melatonin to Neural Pathways

Δημοσιεύτηκε στις 29 Ιουν 2016

Russell
Foster, Debra Skene and Stafford Lightman discuss the science of sleep.
Why do we need sleep and what are the physiological processes driving
our circadian rhythm? When is our circadian clock disrupted and how does
this affect our health? Cognitive neuroscientist Vincent Walsh chairs
the debate.
Subscribe for regular science videos: http://bit.ly/RiSubscRibe

The
science behind sleeplessness can help us understand our rhythms so we
can live better and healthier lives. While hormones, such a melatonin,
play a role in driving our circadian clock, the amount of sleep we get
and our sleep cycles also affect our hormonal release patterns, with
far-reaching implications on our health.
Cognitive neuroscientist
Vincent Walsh chairs a discussion with a panel of experts who specialise
in circadian rhythms. They explore how light detection plays a role in
our sleep-wake cycles, how hormone release is regulated and the
implications of changes to our circadian clock and sleeplessness over
time.

This event was supported by British Psychological Society and Society for Endocrinology.

Scientists
at the Large Hadron Collider may have just discovered a new fundamental
particle that could change the way we look at the universe. Is this
Dark Energy? A giant Neutrino? The big brother of the Higgs Boson? Or
could it be the mysterious Graviton? Matt also reveals the answer to the
