Q&A - An Introduction to Paranormal Psychology - with Chris French

Δημοσιεύτηκε στις 27 Ιουλ 2016

Are
there any paranormal phenomena supported by evidence? Have you ever
found anything during experiments you couldn’t explain? Chris French
answers questions from the audience following his talk on anomalistic
psychology.
Watch the talk here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jve3p...

Ever
since records began, in every known society, a substantial proportion
of the population has reported unusual experiences many of which we
would today label as ‘paranormal’. Opinion polls
show that the
majority of the general public accepts that paranormal phenomena do
occur. Such widespread experience of and belief in the paranormal can
only mean one of two things. Either the paranormal is real, in which
case this should be accepted by the wider scientific community which
currently rejects such claims; or else belief in and experience of
ostensibly paranormal phenomena can be fully explained in terms of
psychological factors. Chris French provides an introduction to the
sub-discipline of anomalistic psychology, which may be defined as the
study of extraordinary phenomena of behaviour and experience, in an
attempt to provide non-paranormal
explanations in terms of known psychological and physical factors.

Chris
French is Professor of Psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London.
His research focusses on the psychology of paranormal belief and
ostensibly paranormal experiences, the belief in conspiracy theories and
false memories.

An Introduction to Paranormal Psychology - with Chris FrenchΔημοσιεύτηκε στις 27 Ιουλ 2016

Do
ghosts exist? Is there any evidence for the paranormal? With millions
believing in paranormal phenomena, it must either exist or be explained
by psychological factors. Chris French introduces the field of
anomalistic psychology, which aims to provide non-paranormal, scientific
explanations of the seemingly unexplainable.

Exoplanets: Under a Microscope, and Through a Wide-field Lens - Sarah Ba...

Exoplanets: Under a Microscope, and Through a Wide-field Lens - Sarah Ba

Δημοσιεύτηκε στις 27 Ιουλ 2016

The
Solar System furnishes the most familiar planetary architecture: many
planets, orbiting nearly coplanar to one another. We can examine the
composition and atmospheres of the Solar System planets in detail, even
occasionally in situ. Studies of planets orbiting other stars
(exoplanets), in contrast, only begin to approach the precision of
humanity's knowledge of Earth five hundred years ago. I will describe a
two-pronged approach to the study of exoplanets. One approach involves
time-intensive investigations of individual planets to eke out bulk
density or single molecules in the planetary atmosphere. Another
involves studies of the ensemble properties of planetary systems, and
addresses the question of a "typical" planetary system in the Milky Way.
In an era with thousands of exoplanet discoveries in hand and thousands
more to follow in short order, a judicious combination of these
approaches is emerging. I'll showcase some of my own detailed findings
of other worlds (placing Earth in context), in addition to wider-field
studies of typical planet occurrence and formation. I'll close with an
opportunity, using an existing data set, to make inroads into the
singular question driving much of exoplanetary science: the
detectability of signatures of life.

School on Current Frontiers in Condensed Matter Research

URL: http://www.icts.res.in/program/cficmr16

DATES: Monday 20 Jun, 2016 - Wednesday 29 Jun, 2016

VENUE : Ramanujan Lecture Hall, ICTS Bangalore

DESCRIPTION:
Understanding
strongly interacting quantum many body systems is one of the major
frontiers in present day physics. Condensed matter physics provides a
wide panoply of systems where strong interaction between constituent
particles play a dominant role; some examples of such systems are high
temperature superconductors, spin-liquids, fractional quantum Hall
systems, and ultracold atoms in the strong-coupling regime. Recent
additions to this list include topological insulators/superconductors,
transition metal oxides and their heterostructures. These materials have
the added feature that they have strong spin-orbit coupling. The
interplay of strong interactions and strong spin-orbit coupling is
presently a frontier area of research in condensed matter physics.

This
program aims to introduce graduate students and post-docs to different
aspects of strongly interacting systems focusing on ideas which are
recently animating the condensed matter community world-wide. The
program will consist of a week-long pedagogical lectures from 20.06.2016
to 26.06.2016 on frontier areas, followed by three days of a discussion
meeting from 27.06.2016 to 29.06.2016 on related topics, presenting and
discussing the latest situation in these areas.

The school lecturers are :

Subir Sachdev (Harvard University)
Mohit Randeria ( The Ohio State University)
Jainendra Jain ( Penn State University)
Jay D. Sau ( University of Maryland, College Park )
Kedar Damle (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai)
Vijay Shenoy (Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore)
Diptiman Sen (Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore)
Students
and post-docs interested in attending this program should click on the
link "APPLY" on top of this page and follow the instructions.

ORGANIZERS: Subhro Bhattacharjee, Jainendra Jain, H R Krishnamurthy, Krishnendu Sengupta and Rajdeep Sensarma

The
interface of Biology and Physics is an exciting and rapidly developing
frontier of science. This lecture will draw examples from the study of
animal development and the study of evolution -- two of the fundamental
problems of Biology -- to illustrate the sometimes unexpected ways in
which concepts, ideas and approaches of Theoretical Physics come to fore
in the quest to understand the rich world of biological phenomena.

The Architecture of Biological Complexity - Sydney Brenner

The Architecture of Biological Complexity - Sydney Brenner

Δημοσιεύτηκε στις 24 Ιαν 2013

Speaker : Sydney Brenner
Venue : J.N. Tata Auditorium, IISc, Bangalore
Date and Time : 18 Oct 12, 18:00

In
his paper "On Computable Numbers" Turing proposed a way of performing
mechanical procedures on binary inputs to test whether mathematical
functions could be computed from a set of simple rules. The Turing
machine, as it came to be called, worked on a tape which it could move
in both directions and on which it could write and erase binary symbols.
He proved that there was a Universal Turing Machine, which, given a
description of any Turing machine could then carry out the particular
computation of that machine. Modern computers and their stored
programmes implement Universal Machines. von Neumann, following Turing,
began to think about how machines could build other machines. He
discovered that he could define a Universal Construction Machine, which
given the description of any Constructor, could construct it. This led
him to define the logical structure of a self-reproducing machine.
Remarkably, an implementation did not have to be invented, but exists in
all biological systems. It requires a description of itself to build a
copy of itself, but must copy the instructions and insert this copy into
the new machine to complete the task. Thus Schrodinger was wrong when
he wrote that the chromosome contained both the plan for the organism
and the means to execute it; while they only contain a description of
the means of execution.

This notion of computation is, in my
opinion, the only valid approach to biological complexity and is opposed
to many of the ideas underlying what has come to be called systems
biology, which is very fashionable today. It will be shown that systems
biology attempts to solve inverse problems - that is, obtain models of
biological systems from observations of their behaviour - whereas, what I
call computational biology, continues in the classical mode of
discovering the machinery of the system and computing behaviour, solving
a forward problem.

How big data is transforming the future of news and media

The
ongoing evolution of technology and global internet connectivity has
completely transformed media consumption. News organisations have needed
to adapt to the changing demands of consumers. This has required
rethinking not only editorial coverage but also the overhaul of
newspaper business models. Tom Betts - Chief Data Officer, Financial
Times - will explain what is behind the FT's digital growth, and how
customer data has both informed this transition and created new growth
opportunities.

GENIUS by Stephen Hawking - Why Are We Here ?

Δημοσιεύτηκε στις 24 Ιουλ 2016

GENIUS BY STEPHEN HAWKING - EPISODE 3:

WHY ARE WE HERE?
The volunteers pose an important question about our role in the universe.
This episode is truly mind-bending – can they work out why they exist at all?

Featuring
smashed glasses, spooky castles and a truly freaky flash-mob
illustration of multiple universes, Why Are We Here? takes the subjects
down a rabbit hole of deeply profound realizations. During this process.
Stephen Hawking helps them think like philosophers as much as
scientists. The end result is that the volunteers have a newfound
appreciation of why they are here at all.

Along the way, this
episode of Genius also explains how the great minds of history reached
their conclusions about the nature of the universe. We travel around the
world to find out how these breakthroughs were made, and how important
they still are, according to the world’s top thinkers.

About Stephen Hawking

Prof.
Hawking is one of the world’s leading physicists and cosmologists. He
is an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Director of
Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University
of Cambridge. His scientific works include a collaboration with Roger
Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of
general relativity, and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit
radiation, often called Hawking radiation. Hawking was the first to set
forth a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory
of relativity and quantum mechanics. He is a vigorous supporter of the
many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.

He is an
