Black
holes! From Stephen Hawking to Interstellar, black holes are mammoths
in the world of science AND sci-fi. But what exactly IS a black hole?
Do events happen inside black holes? Are black holes really a hole? Are
black holes really black?! Join Gabe on this week’s episode of PBS Space
Time as he debunks popular black hole misconceptions, and rethinks what
the term, ‘black hole’, even means. Thought you knew what a black hole
was? Think again!

Supermassive Black Hole at the Center of the Galaxy

Supermassive Black Hole at the Center of the Galaxy

Δημοσιεύτηκε στις 27 Αυγ 2015

Feel
the pull of the largest object in our galaxy, a supermassive black
hole. Astronomers are discovering its properties by probing the objects
that are buzzing around it at mind-boggling speeds.

From a
distance, our galaxy would look like a flat spiral, some 100,000 light
years across, with pockets of gas, clouds of dust, and about 400 billion
stars rotating around the galaxys center. Thick dust and blinding
starlight have long obscured our vision into the mysterious inner
regions of the galactic center. And yet, the clues have been piling up,
that something important, something strange is going on in there.
Astronomers tracking stars in the center of the galaxy have found the
best proof to date that black holes exist. Now, they are shooting for
the first direct image of a black hole.

Scientists believe they may have found a way to turn cancerous cells back into healthy tissue.
Their lab-based work suggests there is a biological step that can restore normality and stop cells replicating out of control.
When the US researchers added molecules called microRNAs, it put the brakes on cancer, Nature Cell Biology reports.

Ultimate Bipolar Nebula

Ultimate Bipolar Nebula

Δημοσιεύτηκε στις 26 Αυγ 2015
From
Hubblecast. A new Hubble Space Telescope image shows off the Twin Jet
Nebula, highlighting the nebula’s shells and its knots of expanding gas
in striking detail. Two iridescent lobes of material stretch outwards
from a central star system. Within these lobes two huge jets of gas are
streaming from the star system at speeds in excess of one million
kilometres per hour.

The glowing and expanding shells of gas
clearly visible in this image represent the final stages of life for an
old star of low to intermediate mass. The star has not only ejected its
outer layers, but the exposed remnant core is now illuminating these
layers — resulting in a spectacular light show like the one seen here.

Ordinary
planetary nebulae have one star at their centre, bipolar nebulae have
two, in a binary star system. Astronomers have found that the two stars
in this pair each have around the same mass as the Sun, ranging from 0.6
to 1.0 solar masses for the smaller star, and from 1.0 to 1.4 solar
masses for its larger companion. The larger star is approaching the end
of its days and has already ejected its outer layers of gas into space,
whereas its partner is further evolved, and is a small white dwarf.

The
characteristic shape of the wings of the Twin Jet Nebula is most likely
caused by the motion of the two central stars around each other. It is
believed that a white dwarf orbits its partner star and thus the ejected
gas from the dying star is pulled into two lobes rather than expanding
as a uniform sphere. The nebula’s wings are still growing and, by
measuring their expansion, astronomers have calculated that the nebula
was created only 1200 years ago.

Within the wings, starting from
the star system and extending horizontally outwards like veins are two
faint blue patches. Although these may seem subtle in comparison to the
nebula’s rainbow colours, these are actually violent twin jets streaming
out into space, at speeds in excess of one million kilometers per hour.
These jets are slowly changing their orientation, precessing across the
lobes as they are pulled by the wayward gravity of the binary system.

Laser detects brain tumour cells during surgery

Laser detects brain tumour cells during surgery

Surgeons in London have used lasers to diagnose abnormal tissue during an operation to remove a brain tumour for the first time in Europe.
The non-invasive technique measures light reflected off tissue to determine whether it is cancerous or healthy.
The patient, Reuben Hill, 22, is making a good recovery after the operation at Charing Cross Hospital.
It is hoped the technique could make this kind of delicate surgery faster and more accurate.
It has only been tried in Montreal, Canada, before now.
Mr Hill, who is from Devon and studying for a PhD in physics at Imperial College London, works with the same laser technology as used in his operation.
Before surgery, he told me: "My inner scientist is fascinated by what they are going to do.
"Understanding the physics involved definitely makes it less frightening."

How it works

laser probe

Image caption The laser probe in action
During the operation, surgeons use a near-infrared laser probe, pointing the beam of light on to the exposed brain.
This causes molecules in the cells to vibrate.
Fibre optics in the probe collect the scattered light that bounces off the tissue.
This is analysed using Raman spectroscopy, which can measure the frequency of vibrations.
Healthy and abnormal tissue have a slightly different "signature".
The whole process takes a couple of seconds, and is entirely non-invasive.

The dust in our homes contains an average of 9,000 different species of microbes, a study suggests.
Researchers from the University of Colorado at Boulder analysed the dust found in 1,200 households across the United States.
They discovered that the types of bacteria and fungi varied depending on where the home was located, who lived there and whether pets were present.
The research is published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
Dr Noah Fierer, associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, who carried out the study, said: "This is really basic natural history we are investigating here.

The
maths we learn in school can seem like a dull set of rules, laid down
by the ancients and not to be questioned. Jordan Ellenberg shows how
wrong this view is through stories that show the power of mathematical
thinking.

beneath the messy and chaotic surface of our daily lives. Maths is the
science of not being wrong, worked out through centuries of hard work
and argument.

Jordan Ellenberg is a professor of Mathematics at
University of Wisconsin, and the 'Do the Math' columnist at Slate. His
book 'How not to be wrong: The hidden mathematics of everyday life' was

The Story Of The Universe : Big Bang, Space-time, And The Relativity The...

The
Universe is all of spacetime and everything that exists therein,
including all planets, stars, galaxies, the contents of intergalactic
space, the smallest subatomic particles, and all matter and
energy.[1][2][3][4][5][6] Similar terms include the cosmos, the world,
reality, and nature.

The estimated diameter of the observable
universe is about 93 billion light years or 28 billion parsecs.[7]
Scientific observation of the Universe has led to inferences of its
earlier stages, which appear to have been governed by the same physical
laws and constants throughout most of its extent and history. The Big
Bang theory is the prevailing cosmological model that describes the
early development of the Universe, which is estimated to have begun
13.798 ± 0.037 billion years ago.[8][9]

Scientists remain unsure
about what, if anything, preceded the Big Bang. Many refuse to
speculate, doubting that any information from any such prior state could
ever be accessible.[citation needed] There are various multiverse
hypotheses, in which some physicists have suggested that the Universe
might be one among many, or even an infinite number, of universes that
likewise exist.[10][11]

The universe is composed of 4.9 percent
atomic matter, 26.6 percent dark matter and 68.5 percent dark energy[12]
Observations of supernovae have shown that the Universe is expanding at
an accelerating rate.[13] There are several competing theories about
the ultimate fate of the universe.

wormholes, black holes and white holes   explained

Δημοσιεύτηκε στις 6 Ιουν 2015
Until
recently, the black holes in our universe were thought to be massive
singularities that devour stars and galaxies. However, some new theories
suggests that black holes may turn into white holes that explosively
pour all the material the black holes swallowed back into space. If this
is the case, then there is a connection between white and black holes:
the wormhole.

is dark energy? What is dark matter? Well, if we knew exactly we would
have a nobel prize – we know that they exist though. So what do we know
about those strange things?

Starspots and the dynamic evolution... Jeremy Tregloan-Reed (SETI Talks)

Δημοσιεύτηκε στις 19 Μαρ 2015
Full title:
Starspots and the dynamic evolution of hot-Jupiter exoplanet systems

When
a hot-Jupiter transits its host star and crosses an active region there
is a possibility that it will occult a starspot. When this happens a
starspot anomaly is usually seen in the resulting transit lightcurve.
Generally viewed as a nuisance, the most common approach is to remove
the affected data points before performing an analysis to determine the
lightcurve properties. However, when a starspot anomaly is found in
transit photometry it can allow a wealth of information to be
discovered. Apart from determining the physical properties of the
starspot (such as position, size and temperature) if a starspot anomaly
is found in two sets of transit photometry and is due to the same
starspot it is then possible to determine the stellar rotation period at
the given latitude of the starspot. It is also possible to measure the
sky-projected stellar obliquity of the system which can then begin to
shed some light on the primary mechanism of the dynamical evolution of
the system.
