Tech Talk:  John Martinis,  "Design of a Superconducting Quantum Computer"

Δημοσιεύθηκε στις 28 Φεβ 2014

John Martinis visited Google LA to
give a tech talk: "Design of a Superconducting Quantum Computer." This
talk took place on October 15, 2013.

Bio:

John M.
Martinis attended the University of California at Berkeley from 1976 to
1987, where he received two degrees in Physics: B.S. (1980) and Ph.D.
(1987). His thesis research focused on macroscopic quantum tunneling in
Josephson Junctions. After completing a post-doctoral position at the
Commisiariat Energie Atomic in Saclay, France, he joined the
Electromagnetic Technology division at NIST in Boulder. At NIST he was
involved in understanding the basic physics of the Coulomb Blockade, and
worked to use this phenomenon to make a new fundamental electrical
standard based on counting electrons. While at NIST he also invented
microcalorimeters based on superconducting sensors for x-ray
microanalysis and astrophysics. In June of 2004 he moved to the
University of California, Santa Barbara where he currently holds the
Worster Chair. At UCSB, he has continued work on quantum computation.
Along with Andrew Cleland, he was awarded in 2010 the AAAS science
breakthrough of the year for work showing quantum behavior of a
mechanical oscillator.

Abstract:

Superconducting quantum
computing is now at an important crossroad, where "proof of concept"
experiments involving small numbers of qubits can be transitioned to
more challenging and systematic approaches that could actually lead to
building a quantum computer. Our optimism is based on two recent
developments: a new hardware architecture for error detection based on
"surface codes" [1], and recent improvements in the coherence of
superconducting qubits [2]. I will explain how the surface code is a
major advance for quantum computing, as it allows one to use qubits with
realistic fidelities, and has a connection architecture that is
compatible with integrated circuit technology. Additionally, the surface
code allows quantum error detection to be understood using simple
principles. I will also discuss how the hardware characteristics of
superconducting qubits map into this architecture, and review recent
results that suggest gate errors can be reduced to below that needed for
the error detection threshold.

This is the Errol Morris documentary
about Stephen Hawking, named after Stephen's book, A Brief History of
Time. It's a brilliant documentary, scored by Philip Glass, that was
never released on DVD in the U.S. and is not otherwise available through
Netflix streaming, Blockbuster online, Hulu, iTunes, etc. (There's a
Dutch DVD, which may or may not be licensed, but that's all I know of.)

Professor Carolin Crawford answers every question you've ever had about the most romantic stellar bodies, the stars: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and...
are an ubiquitous feature of our local Galactic environment. They do
not last forever -- but form, develop and evolve over timescales of
millions or billions of years, eventually to expire in dramatic style.
We look at the lifecycles of different kinds of stars, and in
particular, what they reveal about our own origins. The transcript and

Hawking is the extraordinary story
of the planet's most famous living scientist, told for the first time in
his own words and by those closest to him. Made with unique access to
Hawking's private life, this is an intimate and moving journey into
Stephen's world, both past and present. An inspirational portrait of an
iconic figure, Hawking relates his incredible personal journey from
boyhood under-achiever, to PhD genius, to being diagnosed with Motor
Neuron Disease and given just two years to live. Despite the constant
threat of death, Hawking manages to make many remarkable scientific
discoveries and rises to fame and super-stardom. Hawking - a remarkable

A WISE search for large extraterrestrial civilizations

A WISE search for large extraterrestrial civilizations

Δημοσιεύθηκε στις 5 Δεκ 2013

Speaker
Jason T. Wright, Penn. State University

Abstract:
If
alien civilizations exist throughout the universe, many have had
billions of years to develop technology, expand their population and
energy supplies, and travel across their galaxies. Kardashev classified
hypothetical advanced civilizations by the magnitude of their power
supply, with Type II civilizations harnessing most of the energy output
of their host star, and Type III civilizations using most of the power
in their galaxy. As Dyson pointed out in 1960, the waste heat emitted
by a such civilizations would easily overwhelm that of their host star
or galaxy, distinguishing them from "normal" astrophysical sources.
This approach to SETI makes few assumptions about the behavior of alien
civilizations, primarily: conservation of energy, the laws of
thermodynamics, and that given the age of the Universe aliens have had
time to develop very large energy supplies.

The WISE all-sky
mid-infrared survey has dramatically improved our ability to detect such
civilizations and to distinguish them from "natural" astrophysical
sources. I will discuss our team's efforts to identify candidate Type
II civilizations in the Milky Way and Type III civilizations throughout
the low-redshift universe. Because the scope and assumptions of this
approach are complementary to those of telecommunication SETI, a null
result has the potential to rule out broad classes of proposed
resolutions to the Fermi-Hart Paradox, particularly those that invoke
organization of advanced alien species across the Milky Way.

SETI Talks: http://seti.org/talks

Speaker: Joe Polchinsky, Kavli Institute for Particle Physics, UC Santa Barbara

Abstract:

Thought
experiments have played an important role in figuring out the laws of
physics. For the unification of quantum mechanics and gravity, where the
phenomena take place in extreme regimes, they are even more crucial.
Hawking's 1976 paper "Breakdown of Predictability in Gravitational
Collapse" presented one of the great thought experiments in the history
of physics, arguing that black holes destroy information in a way that
requires a modification of the laws of quantum mechanics. Skeptics for
years failed to poke holes in Hawking's argument, but concluded that if
quantum mechanics is to be saved then our understanding of spacetime
must break down in a radical way.

Dr. Polchinsky will present
some of the history of these ideas, what has already been learned from
this puzzle, and the recent `firewall' controversy, which argues that
Einstein's theory breaks down radically for an observer falling into a
black hole.

Bullet Galaxies and Dark Matter - Marusa Bradac (SETI Talks) with SLIDES

Δημοσιεύθηκε στις 20 Φεβ 2014

One of the greatest accomplishments
in recent astrophysics is the creation of a model for the complete
inventory of the Universe. All the observational data tells us with
extremely high certainty that ordinary matter (every particle ever
detected by every person who ever lived) makes up only one fifth of all
the matter there is. The rest goes by the popular name of dark matter.
Because it is dark, dark matter has been notoriously hard to detect; it
doesn't emit or reflect radiation such as light or heat, and it can have
only the feeblest of interactions with itself and ordinary matter. So
how do we know it is there? In this talk, I will discuss how astronomers
observe the invisible matter in one of the true gems on the sky: a
giant cluster of galaxies also called the Bullet Cluster.

Because
of technical problems during our talk, we were not able to record the
slides along with the talk, but thanks to a fan of the talks series,

propulsion allowing relativistic probes and interstellar communications
using existing technologies. Recent developments in photonics allow such
a system whereas even a decade ago it would have been simply science

After decades of improvement in
treatment many microbes were thought to be on the edge of extinction,
now they appear to be resurgent: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and...

Whilst this was achieved with smallpox, the promise if eradication of trachoma and river blindness remains elusive.
Furthermore
the increasing resistance if organisms to antibiotics is becoming and
urgent challenge in all parts of the world. The resurgence if
Tuberculosis is a particular problem.

How these organisms cause
