The
Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) works by
detecting tiny differences in the length of two laser beams. Just how
tiny are these differences? About 10,000 times smaller than the diameter
of an individual proton. At the World Science Festival's annual On the
Shoulders of Giants address, LIGO pioneer Barry Barish put the
detectors' extreme sensitivity into mind-blowing perspective.

GENIUS BY STEPHEN HAWKING - EPISODE 4:
WHERE DID THE UNIVERSE COME FROM?
(PBS) Genius by Stephen Hawking - Season 1, Episode 4
The group experiments with cars and balloons to understand the origin of the universe.
-
Can
we work out where the universe comes from? With the help of racing
cars, ice-skaters, balloons and running tracks, Hawking leads his three
intrepid souls to a deeper understanding of the evolution of the
universe than the average physics major.
-
About Stephen Hawking
Prof.
Hawking is one of the world’s leading physicists and cosmologists. He
is an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Director of
Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University
of Cambridge. His scientific works include a collaboration with Roger
Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of
general relativity, and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit
radiation, often called Hawking radiation. Hawking was the first to set
forth a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory
of relativity and quantum mechanics. He is a vigorous supporter of the
many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.
He is an
Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a lifetime member of the
Pontifical Academy of Sciences and a recipient of the Presidential Medal
of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States. Hawking
was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge
between 1979 and 2009 and has achieved commercial success with works of
popular science in which he discusses his own theories and cosmology in
general; his book A Brief History of Time appeared on the British
Sunday Times best-seller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks.

(PBS) GENIUS by Stephen Hawking - Episode 3 - Why Are We Here?
Δημοσιεύτηκε στις 30 Μαΐ 2016
GENIUS BY STEPHEN HAWKING - EPISODE 3:
WHY ARE WE HERE?
(PBS) Genius by Stephen Hawking - Season 1, Episode 3
The volunteers pose an important question about our role in the universe.
-
This episode is truly mind-bending – can they work out why they exist at all?
Featuring
smashed glasses, spooky castles and a truly freaky flash-mob
illustration of multiple universes, Why Are We Here? takes the subjects
down a rabbit hole of deeply profound realizations. During this process.
Stephen Hawking helps them think like philosophers as much as
scientists. The end result is that the volunteers have a newfound
appreciation of why they are here at all.
Along the way, this
episode of Genius also explains how the great minds of history reached
their conclusions about the nature of the universe. We travel around the
world to find out how these breakthroughs were made, and how important
they still are, according to the world’s top thinkers.

GENIUS BY STEPHEN HAWKING - EPISODE 2:
ARE WE ALONE?
(PBS) Genius by Stephen Hawking - Season 1, Episode 2
Three volunteers set to find out how likely it is that aliens exist.
-
World-famous
scientist Stephen Hawking presents a series of fun physical and mental
challenges to three ordinary people. Can they think like a genius? The
task is to work out the likelihood of alien life out there in the
universe.
Cue an extraordinary journey of discovery, involving
tons of sand, huge machinery, some straightforward thinking and several
amazing, head-exploding reveals.
The team discovers how many
stars there are in the night sky, how to look for planets around those
stars and how many of those planets could harbor life. To watch the team
members struggle with their own discoveries is almost as much fun as
guessing the outcomes of the experiments.

Q&A - Particle Accelerators Reimagined - with Suzie Sheehy
Δημοσιεύτηκε στις 18 Αυγ 2016
Could
CERN have detected supersymmetry? Should we be interested in plasma
wakefield acceleration? Does the size of protons make them less suitable
for medical application than electrons? Suzie Sheehy answers questions
from the audience.
Watch her talk here: https://youtu.be/jLmciZdh5j4
Subscribe for weekly science videos: http://bit.ly/RiSubscRibe
How to power a particle accelerator: https://youtu.be/-F9EqYLQKYI
Suzie
Sheehy is an Accelerator Physicist at the University of Oxford. Her
research interests lie in the areas of particle physics, accelerator
physics and their applications including medical and energy
applications.
She is also heavily involved in science outreach
and often appears in the media to explain the work of particle
physicists and how accelerators work.
This event was supported by the Science and Technology Facilities Council.

Living Earths: The Astronomical Answer to “Are We Alone?"
Living Earths: The Astronomical Answer to “Are We Alone?"
Ζωντανή ροή πριν από 21 ώρες
NASA
has begun four concept studies of major space observatories that could
launch sometime in the coming couple decades. In this fourth in our
series on these studies, we discuss the Habitable Exoplanet (HabEx)
concept.
HabEx is a design for a highly capable observatory with
one of the most ambitious and exciting goals: the astronomical search
for life-bearing planets in the solar neighborhood.
The
discovery over the past few years that stars in the Milky Way may each
be orbited by at least one planet suggests that among these numerous
planetary systems may reside planets similar to Earth and perhaps even
harboring life.
The HabEx concept is intended to be the
astronomical community’s response to an age-old question of humanity,
“Are we alone in the cosmos?" Such observations require a large pristine
optical space telescope, which will also enable a broad range of unique
investigations in general astrophysics.
Please join our
regular hosts, Tony Darnell, Alberto Conti, and Harley Thronson, as they
discuss with Dr. Bertrand Mennesson (NASA JPL), Dr. Scott Gaudi (Ohio
State University) and Dr. Rachel Somerville (Rutgers University) the
astronomical search for life, exciting new studies in general
astrophysics, and the technological advances that will make it possible.
