ΠΟΙΑ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΤΑ ΚΥΡΙΑ ΣΕΝΑΡΙΑ;

Oxford Instruments NanoScience reckons its Proteox dilution refrigerator will help researchers and start-ups to fast-track the development of next-generation quantum technologies

If January turns out to be a template for the rest of 2021, the product development team at Oxford Instruments NanoScience is set for a busy year after registering the first industry and academic installations of Proteox, a next-generation dilution refrigerator designed for applications in quantum computing R&D and ultra-low-temperature condensed-matter physics. The customers: Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC), a University of Oxford start-up that’s pioneering a “quantum computing as a service” (QCaaS) business model, and the University of Glasgow’s quantum circuits group, a multidisciplinary research team working at the frontiers of quantum science, technology and application.

Pathways to scalable quantum technologies

15 Oct 2020 Hamish Johnston

This episode of the Physics World Weekly podcast features interviews with two leaders in the race to build practical quantum computers.

Michelle Simmons is director of Australia’s Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology. She talks about how her early work on fabricating solar cells kindled a passion for building electronic devices that she now pursues by leading a research group at the University of New South Wales that is building solid-state quantum computing devices at the atomic scale.

This week the LIGO-Virgo collaboration announced the detection of gravitational waves from the most massive black-hole merger ever seen. This podcast features an interview with LIGO–Virgo member and University of Portsmouth astrophysicist Laura Nuttall, who explains why scientists are puzzling over the origin of one of the black holes involved in the merger. She also looks forward to the next observing run of the LIGO–Virgo detectors and what astrophysical events they might capture.

If we are to create a colony on the Moon – perhaps as a jumping off point for the human exploration of Mars – we will need a source of water. In this episode of the Physics World Weekly podcast, planetary scientist Hannah Sargeant of the Open University explains how water could be obtained on the Moon and what it would be used for.
