Ξεκίνησε η προσπάθεια δικτύωσης όλων των επίγειων μέσων παρατήρησης του Διαστήματος
«Παγκόσμιο» τηλεσκόπιο για τη μαύρη τρύπα του Γαλαξία
Τη γιγάντια μαύρη τρύπα στο κέντρο του γαλαξία μας θα προσπαθήσουν να δουν και να μελετήσουν οι ερευνητές με το νέο τηλεσκόπιο


 
 
Επιστήμονες σε όλο τον κόσμο ξεκίνησαν την προσπάθεια δημιουργίας του Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). Δεν πρόκειται για ένα νέο τηλεσκόπιο αλλά για τη σύνδεση όλων των ισχυρών επίγειων τηλεσκόπιων δημιουργώντας ένα υπερ-τηλεσκόπιο. Στόχος είναι να μπορέσουν οι αστρονόμοι να διεισδύσουν με το EHT στο κέντρο του γαλαξία μας και να παρατηρήσουν τη γιγάντια μελανή οπή που βρίσκεται εκεί.

In
this segment of our "How far away is it" video book, we take a look at
our stellar neighborhood and how we know how far away these nearby stars
are.

We cover the first stellar parallax measurement form the
star Cygni 61. Then we examine our stellar neighborhood including:
Proxima Centauri, Alpha Centauri, Barnard's Star with its Proper Motion,
Wolf 359, Lalande 21185, Sirius A & B, 61 Cygni, Altair, Fomalhaut
with its planet, and Vega.

A deeper look into what we mean by
'luminosity' is outlined. We point out that it is measured in watts just
like a light bulb and that its value over distance from a point source
follows the 'inverse square law'. We use our Sun as an example and
introduce Einstein's famous "energy = mass time the speed of light
squared" formula.

We then cover some more stars including:
Pollux, Arcturus, GJ1214, Capella, and Castor. Having reached the limits
of ground based telescopes to measure parallax, we discuss the European
Space Agency's Hipparcos satellite and the more distant stars it helped
fined parallax for including: HD 189733, Aldebaran, Mizar, Spica, Mira,
Polaris, and Antares. Along the way, we cover how a star's mass is
calculated from the motion of binary stars, and then we build the mass
vs. luminosity empirical graph.

We end by pointing out that
parallax only takes us to a small percentage of stars in the Milky Way
and that we'll need to know more about light to go any further.

In this segment of our "How far away is it" video book, we cover the structure of the Milky Way galaxy.

After
a brief history of what we thought going into the 20th century and how
that changed, we give a high-level description of the three main
components: the galactic center with its black hole, the galactic disk
with its spiral arms, and the galactic halo stretching far out in all
directions.

Using the full power of the Hubble, Spitzer, and
Chandra space telescopes, we take a deep dive into the center of our
galaxy with its central bulge. We detail the evidence for the existence
of a supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*, at the very center of the
galaxy's core. We cover and illustrate the work done by the UCLA
Galactic Centre Group in conjunction with the new Keck observatory on
top of the Mauna Kea volcano in Hawaii, and the Max Plank Institute for
Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany. This includes the obits of S0-2 and
S0-102 as they approach Sag A*. A look at the G2 Gas Cloud as it
approaches Sag A* is also included.

Next, we go a level deeper
into the nature of a Black Hole singularity. We review electron
exclusion pressure and neutron exclusion pressure forces that hold back
gravity for White Dwarfs and Neutron stars respectively. When that isn't
enough, we get the collapse is total. We cover the Schwarzschild
radius, event horizon, accretion disk and gamma-ray jets. In addition to
the supermassive black hole Sag A*, we show a few of the solar mass
black hole candidates including A0620-00, and GRO J1655-40.

We
then cover the structure of the galactic disk including: the bar core,
the two 3 Parsec arms, Scutum-Centaurus, Perseus, Sagittarius with its
Orion Spur, Norma and the Outer Arm. We review the locations of various
celestial objects we've seen in previous Milky Way segments, to show how
close to us they are. We also cover the disk's rotation and the Sun's
orbit. We end the galactic disk coverage by illustrating how far one
would have to go to take a picture that would include what we see in our
illustrations.

Next, we cover the galactic halo. We start with
Sharpley's globular cluster map that first showed that we were not at
the center of the galaxy. We cover the size of the halo, the inner and
outer halos orbital motion, and recent discoveries of massive amounts of
Hydrogen in the halo and this findings impact on the Dark Matter
debate.

We conclude with another look at the distance ladder that took us across the galaxy.

Lindsay -- He photographs at the interface between nature and culture.
It is his fascination with our relationship to the earth which connects
all of his work - living with a rain forest tribe, traveling with turtle
hunters, looking at his own experience of fly fishing or the culture of
golf and it' s relationship to the natural world. His camera-less
photographs and videos are a visual exploration of nature in an abstract
sense, influenced by space and scientific imagery.

Lynette Cook
-- most widely known as an out-of-this-world space artist, Cook has
enthralled others with the wonders of the cosmos via her depictions of
planets discovered outside our solar system. Published worldwide in
books, periodicals, and documentaries, these renderings have been
featured on ABC7 News and in USA Today.

Rosaly Lopes -- Dr.
Rosaly M. C. Lopes is a Senior Research Scientist at NASA's Jet
Propulsion Laboratory. She is an expert on volcanoes on Earth and the
planets and has worked on the NASA missions Galileo and Cassini. She has
visited more than 50 active volcanoes all over the world and written
more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. She enjoys bringing the
excitement of her research to the general public via lectures, TV shows
and books. Rosaly has obtained numerous awards for her work both in
science and outreach. In 2005, she was awarded the Carl Sagan medal by
the Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical
Society, in recognition of her success in communicating science to the
general public.

Moderator:

Gabriel Alvarado-Marín -- a
visual designer and illustrator at the SETI Institute, his past projects
include websites for the SETI Institute, NASA's Kepler mission and
illustrations for NOAA. His illustrations for the SETI Institute have
ranged from chemical processes, to the inner composition of the planets
in the solar system, to the Milky Way galaxy and are used to drive the
concepts behind the science. His work has also been featured in mission
proposals to NASA and on the cover of the peer-reviewed science journal,
Langmuir.

Η αμερικανική εταιρεία United Space Structures έδωσε στη δημοσιότητα την πρότασή της για έναν διαστημικό σταθμό. Ο σταθμός που προτείνει η εταιρεία έχει σχήμα μανιταριού και το βασικό του πλεονέκτημα σε σχέση με τον Διεθνή Διαστημικό Σταθμό είναι ότι θα προσφέρει στους κατοίκους του συνθήκες τεχνητής βαρύτητας. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι θα παρέχει καλύτερες και ευκολότερες συνθήκες διαμονής στους αστροναύτες επιτρέποντάς τους να μείνουν για πολύ μεγαλύτερο χρονικό διάστημα από ό,τι στον ISS.
