Rotation
is a fundamental physical process throughout the Universe. So much is
spinning, from planets and stars revolving on their axes, to whole
spiral galaxies rotating around their centre. We shall start by looking
at the fundamentals of rotational motion, including the concept of
angular momentum. This then will be extended to show what observations
of rotation can tell us about how planetary systems form and develop,
how neutron stars evolve with time, and how rotational motion provides
crucial evidence for the presence and distribution of the elusive dark
matter.

is a momentous year for the study of dwarf planets – the Dawn mission
arrives at Ceres in the asteroid belt in February, and the New Horizons
spaceprobe will commence its flypast of Pluto and its moons in July. We
shall discuss the smaller bodies of the Solar System – from dwarf
planets to asteroids.

Researchers
have developed a technique to edit out bits of mitochondrial DNA that
could otherwise pass on incurable diseases, a study in mice shows.
Salk
Institute scientists used specifically engineered molecular scissors to
snip out mutations in embryos, leaving healthy DNA intact.
They hope it could one day be used to prevent human mitochondrial diseases.
But experts say though it is a "technical masterpiece", it raises ethical and scientific challenges.
More than 10,000 people are reported to have died in the current Ebola outbreak
An experimental drug has cured monkeys infected with the Ebola virus, US-based scientists have said.
The
treatment, known as TKM-Ebola-Guinea, targets the Makona strain of the
virus, which caused the current deadly outbreak in West Africa.
All
three monkeys receiving the treatment were healthy when the trial ended
after 28 days; three untreated monkeys died within nine days.
People with lower back problems are more likely to have a spine similar in shape to the chimpanzee, our closest ape ancestor.
A lesion which forms in the disc between the bones of the spine is the reason for the differing shape.
It would have caused the vertebrae to change as humans evolved from using four legs to two legs.
The study said a third of all deaths in 2010 were treatable with surgery
Two-thirds
of the world's population have no access to safe and affordable
surgery, according to a new study in The Lancet - more than double the
number in previous estimates.
It means millions of people are dying from treatable conditions such as appendicitis and obstructed labour.
Most live in low and middle-income countries. The study suggests that 93% of people in sub-Saharan Africa cannot obtain basic surgical care.
Previous estimates have only looked at whether surgery was available.

On
March 16, 1966, Neil Armstrong and David Scott launch into space aboard
the Gemini 8 capsule. The mission is to rendezvous and dock with the
Agena space module , a critical step in reaching the moon.
The
story of how the space missions evolved from the X-15 fighter jet in
1959 to get people into space is explained. The programs began with the
Mercury missions: 7 men were selected to carry the first astronaut into
space "on top of a rocket capsule". There was a rush because of
competition with Russia: initially not much was known (a) whether the
rockets would work, and (b) whether man could survive in space. At the
beginning an ape called "Ham" was the first animal that flew. Eventually
Alan Shepard was selected, BUT it is learned that the Soviet Union had
been the first nation to put a man in space: Yuri Gagarin.
Then
John Glenn was selected in 1962 for the longest mission:5 days of
weightlessness. He takes off but runs into trouble - the world waits -
but the Friendship 7 flight worked and "it was obvious that the Russians
are not beating us".
The process moves on to a more scientific
set of missions, led by Scott Carpenter, called the Aurora program. More
problems arise, but are overcome. Aurora 7 is recovered.
The
next program are the Gemini launches, and here president Kennedy
announces the goal of flying to the moon and back.Ten missions are
planned. John Young and Gus Grisman are chosen. A new launch missile,
the Titan was scary - "the rocket was like a controlled explosion".
Engineers fix the problems. In March 1965, "it was white knuckles" when
Gemini 3 was launched but the astronauts were recovered.
The next
big challenge was "walking in space", also known as EVA - Extra
Vehicular Activity. During this time weightlessness was tested using a
specially modified plane called "the vomit Comet". Spacesuit design was
another problem - going from 250 degrees above zero to 250 degrees below
zero rather quickly.
There was still competition with the
Soviets, and NASA rushed matters. It was "a risky business" with EVA
training performed in secret. On Gemini 4, in 1964, Ed White made the
first EVA.
Then it was the "Rendezvous" effort where two
spacecraft could coordinate for an eventual moon landing. Gemini 6 and
Gemini 7 came within 20 feet of each other for 3 orbits. Then Gemini 7
travelled 6 million miles in 14 days. The effort weakened the
astronaut's legs.
Finally Dave Scott and Neil Armstrong
demonstrated docking in 1966 in the Gemini 8 flight. There were
problems, but recovery was achieved.
There were 4 Gemini missions left. Gene Cerman and Tom Stafford flew Gemini 9. It didn't work. Neither did more Gemini attempts.
Finally
Buzz Aldrin, who practised weightless motion under water, on Gemini's
final mission, Aldrin conducted three successful EVAs.

Μια πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα ανακάλυψη έκαναν ερευνητές του Πανεπιστημίου του Δυτικού Οντάριο στον Καναδά. Οι Αλεξάντερ Ντε Σόουζα και Σαντάνου Μπάσου μελέτησαν τις συνθήκες που επικράτησαν αμέσως μετά τον λεγόμενο κοσμικό μεσαίωνα στο Σύμπαν.

Οι αόρατοι άνθρωποι, εκτός των άλλων πλεονεκτημάτων, βρίσκονται και σε καλή ψυχολογική κατάσταση
Το να είναι κανείς αόρατος,
έχει εμπνεύσει πολλούς συγγραφείς, φιλοσόφους αλλά και απλούς ανθρώπους
(ιδίως εφήβους) στο πέρασμα των αιώνων. Τώρα, για πρώτη φορά,
νευροεπιστήμονες στη Σουηδία δημιούργησαν σε ανθρώπους την πλαστή
αίσθηση πως διαθέτουν αόρατο σώμα.
Η βασική ψυχολογική διαπίστωση είναι πως οι «αόρατοι» άνθρωποι
νιώθουν πολύ λιγότερο αγχωμένοι, όταν βρίσκονται ενώπιον καταστάσεων
στρες, όπως π.χ. όταν πρέπει να μιλήσουν ενώπιον κοινού. Με άλλα λόγια, ο
αόρατος άνθρωπος όχι μόνο μαθαίνει τα μυστικά των άλλων, αλλά είναι
λιγότερο αγχωμένος ο ίδιος.

The Sounds of the Universe - Professor Carolin Crawford

In
space no-one can hear you scream... but it is still a noisy Universe.
We are familiar with the many stunning images of space, but these are
only part of the whole human experience. This lecture takes a new
approach to appreciating the Universe, through the vehicle of sound.
Once we understand how sound is propagated, we can look at the how and
where it can exist in space. We examine how sound can be a diagnostic of
cosmic phenomena (such as the song of the Sun and distant stars), the
way it can carry energy across vast volumes of space (away from a black
hole humming in B♭), how it can be a useful way to illustrate processes
in astronomy (such as the rapid spin of pulsars, and other more local
radio emissions) and how it is ultimately responsible for the growth of
all structure we see today in the cosmos.

Angular
momentum (a vector) is introduced. The rate of change of angular
momentum is related to the torque (also a vector). In the absence of an
external torque, angular momentum is conserved. Spin angular momentum
(of planets, stars, neutron stars) is also discussed.

Scientists
genuinely don't know what most of our universe is made of. The atoms
we're made from only make up four per cent. The rest is dark matter and
dark energy (for 'dark', read 'don't know'). The Large Hadron Collider
at CERN has been upgraded. When it's switched on in March 2015, its
collisions will have twice the energy they did before. The hope is that
scientists will discover the identity of dark matter in the debris.
The stakes are high - because if dark matter fails to show itself, it might mean that physics itself needs a rethink.

The
Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world's largest and most powerful
particle collider, and the largest single machine in the world, built by
the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) from 1998 to
2008.
Its aim is to allow physicists to test the predictions of
different theories of particle physics and high-energy physics like the
Standard Model, and particularly prove or disprove the existence of the
theorized Higgs boson and of the large family of new particles predicted
by supersymmetric theories. The discovery of a particle matching the
Higgs boson was confirmed by data from the LHC in 2013. The LHC is
expected to address some of the unsolved questions of physics, advancing
human understanding of physical laws. It contains seven detectors, each
designed for certain kinds of research.
The LHC was built in
collaboration with over 10,000 scientists and engineers from over 100
countries, as well as hundreds of universities and laboratories. It lies
in a tunnel 27 kilometres (17 mi) in circumference, as deep as 175
metres (574 ft) beneath the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva,
Switzerland. It is also the longest machine ever built.
Career: The
band experimented with different styles of music, for which reason the
media found them hard to categorise. Musically they covered alternative
rock, Goth, pop, ambient and dance. They were sometimes classed as a
Shoegaze band, but musically fell between the Britpop and Grunge camps.
They were signed to their own "Jimmi Kidd Rekords" then to "Parallel
Records" and lastly to "Ultimate Records". BBM were managed by Wayne
Perkins for "Chaos Theatre Productions".
Their most famous song,
"Geek Love", was inspired by the book by Katherine Dunn about a family
of freaks in a travelling circus. The artist David Hughes, who drew the
Geek Love book cover, also illustrated the band's Eternal Happiness
album cover. "Geek Love" also uses audio samples from the controversial
Tod Browning film Freaks. "Geek Love" on CD regularly sells for £25-£35
on www.ebay.co.uk. In 2007 "Geek Love" was voted number 16 on the cult
radio station B92's "Top 20 best singles ever" on www.firerecords.com.
"Geek
Love" was championed by BBC Radio One DJ John Peel as a perfect example
of a band self-financing their debut single; he famously stated, "Even
if they never made another record, they'll have achieved more than most
of us do in our entire lives." It was voted number one in his Festive
Fifty in 1992. The band also recorded a Peel Session at Maida Vale 4
which was engineered and produced by Mike Robinson, but this has never
been released. They appeared on the Channel 4 programme The Word
doing a live version of their song "Technologica" in 1993. They were
also featured in Deadline comic and Volume magazine. They did cover
versions of T. Rex's "Life's a Gas", Jane's Addiction's "Jayne says" and
Psychic TV's "Godstar." Bang Bang Machine made the unusual choice of
having different songs on the B-sides of some of their 7 inch singles.
Songs such as "I smile" and "You're no good to yourself" only appear on
vinyl and not any of their CDs. Usually bands put extra tracks on CDs.
The "Evil Circus E.P." spent 2 months in the Indie Charts and reached
number 13 in the MELODY MAKER and number 16 in the NME charts. The Evil
Circus E.P. was also "Single of the week" in the NME. The re-released
"Geek Love" spent 7 weeks in the Indie charts. Bang Bang Machine
recorded with the music producers John Fryer, Ray Shulman, Craig Leon
and Angus Wallace. Bang Bang Machine toured with Pulp, Catherine Wheel
and Eight Storey Window. There was a Bang Bang Machine fanzine called
"Bangman" created by BBM fan Leigh Smith.
Steve Eagles now plays
with the jazz-psycho-funk-poetic-punk band Blurt and teaches guitar.
Lamp is a DJ in Brighton and qualified as a sound engineer. Stan Lee
married Elizabeth Freeth in 2005; in 2007 their baby son was born. Stan
Lee A.K.A. Marc Angel now plays with Psychowrath, a new incarnation of
Wrathchild. In 2007 articles appeared in The Evesham Journal and The
Worcester News about possible future one-off gigs. Steve Eagles also
plays with The Bad Boys, a covers band made up of professional
musicians. Elizabeth and Stan/ Marc have also had another child. BBM
fans are still waiting and hoping for Bang Bang Machine to reform.
Respected music writer and photographer Mick Mercer brought out a Bang
Bang Machine photo book in 2012. The Sunday Times Magazine ran an
article on Bang Bang Machine in July 2013 written by Krissi Murison.
Also in 2013 Steve Eagles unearthed a box full of "lost" BBM DAT tapes.
BBM fans Robert Andersen and Leigh Smith helped him to convert them to
CD for possible future online downloads on iTunes. Bang Bang Machine
made 49 tracks from their back catalogue available on iTunes from the
21st October 2015.
We
can build powerful rockets able to carry people and machines into
orbit, or even vault them to the moon. But our fastest spacecraft don't
hold a candle to the distances that define Interstellar Flight. So
what's on the drawing boards? What futuristic designs and fuel options
promise to one day transport us to the stars, and how practical are
they?

Hubble
was launched in orbit on 24 April 1990 as the first space telescope of
its kind. For two and a half decades, it has beamed back data and images
that have changed our understanding of the Universe and how it came to
be.
This amazing image of the star cluster Westerlund 2 is a
giant cluster of about 3000 stars. The cluster resides in a raucous
stellar breeding ground known as Gum 29, located 20,000 light-years away
in the constellation Carina.
The stellar nursery is enshrouded
by dust, but Hubble’s Camera peered through the dusty veil in
near-infrared light, giving us a clear view of its inner workings. The
image resolves the dense concentration of stars in the center, about 10
light-years across.
The cluster is only about two million years
old, but contains some of the brightest, hottest and most massive stars
ever discovered. Some of the heftiest stars are carving deep cavities in
the surrounding material by unleashing torrents of ultraviolet light

These are etching away the enveloping hydrogen gas cloud in which the
stars were born and are responsible for the weird and wonderful shapes
of the clouds of gas and dust in the image.
The pillars in the
image are composed of dense gas and dust, and are resisting erosion from
the fierce radiation and powerful winds. These gaseous monoliths are a
few light-years tall and point to the central cluster. Other dense
regions surround the pillars, including dark filaments of dust and gas.

Τη Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα το Maven έκανε την χιλιοστή του περιστροφή γύρω από τον Αρη
Τον περασμένο Σεπτέμβριο,
ύστερα από 10 μήνες ταξιδιού όπου διήνυσε μια απόσταση 711 εκατομμυρίων
χιλιομέτρων, το MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) έφτασε
στον Αρη και τέθηκε σε τροχιά γύρω από αυτόν. Οπως ανακοίνωσε η NASA, το
MAVEN ολοκλήρωσε τη Μεγάλη Δευτέρα τη χιλιοστή περιφορά του γύρω από
τον Κόκκινο Πλανήτη στην προσπάθειά του να βρει στοιχεία που συνθέτουν
την ατμοσφαιρική ιστορία του.
Πιθανώς βρέθηκε η εξήγηση για το «Ψυχρό Σημείο» όπου η θερμοκρασία αγγίζει το απόλυτο μηδέν

Υπάρχει μια τεράστια, πιθανώς απόλυτα κενή περιοχή του Σύμπαντος, στην οποία επικρατούν οι πλέον χαμηλές θερμοκρασίες
Ονομάστηκε «Ψυχρό Σημείο» αφού,
σύμφωνα με τους επιστήμονες, πρόκειται για το πιο κρύο σημείο του
Σύμπαντος. Μέχρι τώρα οι ειδικοί δεν είχαν σχεδόν κανένα δεδομένο για
αυτό το απόκοσμο μέρος του Διαστήματος στο οποίο η θερμοκρασία
κυμαίνεται πέριξ των – 270 Κελσίου, τρεις μόλις βαθμούς Κελσίου πάνω από
το απόλυτο μηδέν. Διεθνής ομάδα επιστημόνων υποστηρίζει ότι βρήκε την
εξήγηση. Σύμφωνα με τους ερευνητές, η περιοχή στην οποία βρίσκεται το
Ψυχρό Σημείο είναι μάλλον εντελώς κενή για αυτό και οι θερμοκρασίες εκεί
είναι ακραία χαμηλές.

Τα μέλη μιας απομονωμένης φυλής
του Αμαζονίου που ήρθε για πρώτη φορά σε επαφή με τον έξω κόσμο το 2009
φέρουν το πλουσιότερο μικροβίωμα που έχει ανακαλυφθεί ποτέ σε
ανθρώπους. Το περίεργο όμως είναι ότι τα βακτήρια που ζουν στο δέρμα και
το έντερό τους είναι ανθεκτικά τόσο στα φυσικά όσο και στα συνθετικά
αντιβιοτικά.
Η μελέτη επιβεβαιώνει τις υποψίες ότι ο σύγχρονος τρόπος ζωής μειώνει
την ποικιλία των μικροβίων που ζουν μέσα και πάνω μας. Πολλοί ερευνητές
πιστεύουν μάλιστα ότι η μειωμένη αυτή ποικιλότητα σχετίζεται με
σύγχρονες ασθένειες όπως η παχυσαρκία, ο διαβήτης και ο καρκίνος.

Η NASA έδωσε στη δημοσιότητα
μια εντυπωσιακή εικόνα του πανάρχαιου σφαιρωτού αστρικού σμήνους ngc6388
που βρίσκεται στον αστερισμό του Σκορπιού σε απόσταση 35 χιλιάδων ετών
φωτός από εμάς. Διεθνής ερευνητική ομάδα διαπίστωσε ότι ένας λευκός
νάνος του σμήνους διέλυσε στα εξ ων συνετέθη έναν πλανήτη. Η ανακάλυψη
είναι ιδιαίτερα σημαντική επειδή πρόκειται για ένα φαινόμενο που οι
επιστήμονες υποπτεύονταν ότι μπορεί να συμβαίνει αλλά δεν είχαν μέχρι
σήμερα εντοπιστεί κάποια ίχνη του.

για πρώτη φορά να μετατρέψουν καρκινικά κύτταρα του παγκρέατος ξανά σε
φυσιολογικά. Πρόκειται για μια άκρως ενθαρρυντική εξέλιξη, η οποία, αν
και σε αρχικό ακόμη στάδιο, αφήνει πολλές μελλοντικές θεραπευτικές
υποσχέσεις για τον «σιωπηλό» και επιθετικό καρκίνο του παγκρέατος.
