Inaugural lecture by Professor Joseph Silk as the new Gresham Professor
of Astronomy covers the fiery moments after the creation of the Big

The
universe underwent an inflationary period of expansion. From an
extremely hot beginning, it cooled down then reheated to form the
expanding universe that we observe today. The relic radiation generated
the fossil glow of the cosmic microwave background radiation, a
testament to its fiery origin. Microwave telescopes map out the
structure of the universe long before the galaxies were present, only
370,000 years after Big Bang. The current challenges in cosmic microwave
background astronomy will be described.

Salt Water Flows on Mars During The Martian Summer

Mysterious
features on slopes hinted for a long time that there could be salt
water presently flowing on Mars during certain seasonal conditions in
certain locations. New findings from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter
(MRO) provides the strongest evidence yet that liquid water flows
intermittently on present-day Mars.

Using an imaging spectrometer
on MRO, researchers detected signatures of hydrated minerals on slopes
where mysterious streaks are seen on the Red Planet. These darkish
streaks appear to ebb and flow over time. They darken and appear to flow
down steep slopes during warm seasons, and then fade in cooler seasons.
They appear in several locations on Mars when temperatures are above
minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 23 Celsius), and disappear at colder
times.

These downhill flows, known as recurring slope lineae
(RSL), often have been described as possibly related to liquid water.
The new findings of hydrated salts on the slopes point to what that
relationship may be to these dark features. The hydrated salts would
lower the freezing point of a liquid brine, just as salt on roads here
on Earth causes ice and snow to melt more rapidly. Scientists say it's
likely a shallow subsurface flow, with enough water wicking to the
surface to explain the darkening.

The spectrometer observations
show signatures of hydrated salts at multiple RSL locations, but only
when the dark features were relatively wide. When the researchers looked
at the same locations and RSL weren't as extensive, they detected no
hydrated salt.

Perchlorates have previously been seen on Mars.
NASA's Phoenix lander and Curiosity rover both found them in the
planet's soil, and some scientists believe that the Viking missions in
the 1970s measured signatures of these salts. However, this study of RSL
detected perchlorates, now in hydrated form, in different areas than
those explored by the landers. This also is the first time perchlorates
have been identified from Mars orbit.

The next question to ask
is, are there any other substances dissolved in this water and, indeed,
what chemical reactions, both inorganic and organic, are allowed to
occur within these flows and, ultimatly, could dormant complex
molecules, either the molecules of life or even life itself, emerge from
these surface liquid water streams? This is yet another valuable piece
of information to place into the vast Martian guidebook assembled by the
scientific efforts of space exploration, with plenty of space left for
future discoveries which are only bound to get more interesting.

new chapter in the planets history. Endowed with the power of
conceptual thought - they would quickly multiply and spread to dominate
all corners of the planet, developing the skills and technology
necessary to thrive in every environment on earth. This new documentary
film follows the trail of their amazing journey.

49:13 O men! Behold, We have created you all out of a male and a female,
["We
have created every one of you out of a father and a mother" - implying
that this equality of biological origin is reflected in the equality of
the human dignity common to all.]

49:13 - and have made you into nations and tribes, so that you might come to know one another.
[i.e.
know that all belong to one human family, without any inherent
superiority of one over another. This connects with the exhortation in
the preceding verses to respect and safeguard each other's dignity. In
other words, our evolution into "nations and tribes" is meant to foster
rather than to diminish our mutual desire to understand and appreciate
the essential human oneness underlying our outward differentiations;
and, correspondingly, all racial, national or tribal prejudice ('as
abiyyah) is condemned - implicitly in the Quran - and most explicitly by
the Prophet. Speaking of people's boasting of their national or tribal
past, the Prophet said:

"Behold, God has removed from you the
arrogance of pagan ignorance (jahiliyyah) with its boast of ancestral
glories. Man is but a God-conscious believer or an unfortunate sinner.
All people are children of Adam, and Adam was created out of dust."
(Fragment of a hadith quoted by Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud, on the authority
of Abu Hurayrah.)

And one day he entered the city at a time when most of its people were
resting in their houses, unaware of what was going on in the streets;
and there he encountered two men fighting with one another - one of his
own people, and the other of his enemies. And the one who belonged to
his own people cried out to him for help against him who was of his
enemies - whereupon Moses struck him down with his fist, and thus
brought about his end. But then he said to himself: "This is of Satan's
doing! Verily, he is an open foe, leading [man] astray!"
[These
verses seem to indicate that it was the Israelite, and not the Egyptian,
who had been in the wrong. Apparently, Moses had come to the assistance
of the Israelite out of an instinctive sense of racial kinship without
regard to the rights and wrongs of the case; but immediately afterwards
he realized that he had committed a grave sin not only by killing,
however inadvertently, an innocent person, but also by basing his action
on a mere tribal - or, as we would describe it today, racial or
national prejudice. Evidently, this is the lesson of the above Quranic
segment of the story of Moses. Its moral has been stressed and explained
by the Prophet on many occasions: his famous saying:

"He is not
of us who proclaims the cause of tribal partisanship (asabiyyah); and
he is not of us who fights in the cause of tribal partisanship; and he
is not of us who dies in the cause of tribal partisanship" (Abu Dawud,
on the authority of Jubayr ibn Mut'im). When he was asked to explain the
meaning of "tribal partisanship", the Prophet answered, "It means
helping thine own people in an unjust cause"

A
black hole is a geometrically defined region of spacetime exhibiting
such strong gravitational effects that nothing—including particles and
electromagnetic radiation such as light—can escape from inside it.[1]
The theory of general relativity predicts that a sufficiently compact
mass can deform spacetime to form a black hole.[2][3] The boundary of
the region from which no escape is possible is called the event horizon.
Although crossing the event horizon has enormous effect on the fate of
the object crossing it, it appears to have no locally detectable
features. In many ways a black hole acts like an ideal black body, as it
reflects no light.[4][5] Moreover, quantum field theory in curved
spacetime predicts that event horizons emit Hawking radiation, with the
same spectrum as a black body of a temperature inversely proportional to
its mass. This temperature is on the order of billionths of a kelvin
for black holes of stellar mass, making it essentially impossible to
observe.

news conference was held on Sept. 24 at NASA’s Johnson Space Center
with the next crew launching to the International Space Station,
including NASA astronaut Tim Kopra. ESA astronaut Timothy Peake,
cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko of the Russian Federal Space Agency and Kopra
will launch to the station aboard a Soyuz spacecraft on Dec. 15 from
the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. They’re currently scheduled to
return to Earth in May 2016. Also, The rich colors of Pluto, Anniversary
of MAVEN’s arrival at Mars, Fall IceBridge missions at both poles, New
aviation technology and Robotics team on Capitol Hill!

Πιστή στο ραντεβού της Παρασκευής η NASA δημοσίευσε νέες εικόνες από τον πλανήτη νάνο του ηλιακού μας συστήματος. Πρόκειται για τις υψηλότερης ανάλυσης εικόνες που έχουμε δει από τον Πλούτωνα μέχρι σήμερα. Η πιο εντυπωσιακή εξ αυτών δείχνει με λεπτομέρεια μια περιοχή με παράλληλες ευθυγραμμισμένες οροσειρές οι οποίες ονομάστηκαν Τάρταρα! Τα στελέχη της αποστολής New Horizons αναφέρουν στην ανακοίνωση για τις νέες εικόνες που έδωσαν στη δημοσιότητα ότι Τάρταρα μοιάζουν πολύ με… δέρμα φιδιού.

Ο γεωλογικός σχηματισμός στον Αρη που μοιάζει με το βρετανικό μνημείο

 

Για άλλη μια φορά οι λεγόμενοι κυνηγοί εξωγήινων, χρήστες του Internet που μελετούν προσεκτικά διαστημικές εικόνες αναζητώντας ίχνη ύπαρξης εξωγήινων, εντόπισαν κάτι που εκ πρώτης όψεως μοιάζει ιδιαίτερα εντυπωσιακό. Σε μια από τις εικόνες που φτάνουν από τους δορυφόρους και τα ρομπότ εξερεύνησης στον Κόκκινο Πλανήτη διακρίνεται ένας γεωλογικός σχηματισμός που θυμίζει πολύ το… Στόουνχεντζ.

Προτού συνέλθουν από το σοκ όσοι την είδαν, οι «Τimes» της Νέας Υόρκης ανέλυσαν σε κύριο άρθρο τους την περίπτωση της 23χρονης καρκινοπαθούς Κιμ Σουόζι, η οποία επέλεξε και επέτυχε την κατάψυξη του εγκεφάλου της με την ελπίδα μιας μελλοντικής αναβίωσής της.

Ενας παραπληγικός 26χρονος άνδρας που ήταν τελείως παράλυτος από τη μέση και κάτω εδώ και πέντε χρόνια, κατάφερε να κινήσει ξανά τα πόδια του και να περπατήσει σχεδόν τέσσερα μέτρα, χάρη στη βοήθεια μιας ειδικής συσκευής που «διαβάζει» το μυαλό του. Είναι ο πρώτος παραπληγικός, ο οποίος ειναι σε θέση να κάνει μερικά βήματα, χωρίς να εξαρτάται από ρομποτικά κάτω άκρα.

Genetic clue to breast cancer relapses

Scientists say they have discovered a genetic clue to why some breast cancers relapse, which could lead to better treatment.

A research team from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridge found that cancers that return were more likely to contain certain genes or combinations of genes.
Targeting these genes with early treatments could be key, they said.
The study is being presented at the European Cancer Congress in Vienna.
In around one in five people with breast cancer, the disease will return - either to the same place as the original tumour or another part of the body.

Paralysed man moves legs using brain-reading device

A paralysed man has regained some control over his legs using a device that reads his brain, scientists say.

Brainwaves were interpreted by a computer, which then controlled the electrical stimulation of his leg muscles.
The US study, in the Journal of Neuroengineering and Rehabilitation, showed he was able to walk just under four metres with support.
Experts said maintaining balance was an issue that needed to be addressed.

WHO says most people in Europe too fat

Most people in Europe are too fat, according to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO).

It said 59% of the population were either overweight or obese.
Its European Health Report also said the WHO Europe region, which includes parts of Asia, had the highest levels of alcohol and tobacco use in the world.

Nigeria has been removed from the list of polio endemic countries in what is being regarded as a "milestone" on the quest to eradicate the disease.

The announcement by the World Health Organization (WHO), was made at a meeting of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in New York.
It follows Nigeria going more than a year without a case of wild - naturally occurring - polio.
Three years without cases are required before it can be declared polio free.

Two new kidney cancer drugs 'work'

Two new therapies for hard to treat advanced kidney cancer could change treatment of the disease, say experts at the European Cancer Congress.

Both drugs increased survival in trials which are also published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
One drug takes the brakes off the immune system while the other stops growth signals in the tumour.
Cancer Research UK said the developments will "greatly expand the arsenal" of available drugs.
Kidney cancer is the eighth most common cancer in the UK and survival rates plummet if it is caught late.
Once the tumour has spread to other parts of the body then only one-in-10 people live for five years after diagnosis.

Call to improve radiotherapy access around world

Millions of people globally have died unnecessarily from cancers that could have been treated by radiotherapy, according to doctors.

New figures suggest as many as nine out of 10 people in low-income countries cannot access radiotherapy treatment.
Even in high-income countries where facilities exist, experts warn that there are shortages of equipment and trained staff.

Measurements
of the demographics of exoplanets over a range of planet and host star
properties provide fundamental empirical constraints on theories of
planet formation and evolution. Because of its unique sensitivity to
low-mass, long-period, and free-floating planets, microlensing is an
essential complement to our arsenal of planet detection methods.

Dr.
Gaudi will review the microlensing method, and discuss results to date
from ground-based microlensing surveys. Also, Dr. Gaudi will motivate a
space-based microlensing survey with WFIRST-AFTA, which when combined
with the results from Kepler, will yield a nearly complete picture of
the demographics of planetary systems throughout the Galaxy.

Stephen Hawking is seeking "one simple equation" to bridge Quantum Mechanics and Relativity; The Grand Unified Theory.

Tom Campbell, physicist, proposes a simple identity; R=I. Reality equals Information.

Tom derived a Big Theory of Everything in his book MY Big TOE.

Tom Campbell states,"The 'Hard Problems' of physics exist because of the lack of understanding of our reality."

The
idea that our reality is a virtual reality (a computed simulation) is
slowly gaining acceptance among mainstream physicists, but logic says
that a computed simulation can not compute itself.

The leap
forward required, however, to continue on with the findings that our
beginning started in what Edward Fredkin refers to as "other"
(non-physical) somehow continues to stop short of the goal.

Here's why according to Tom Campbell:

"Consciousness has nothing to do with the physical process."

Tom
on his theory: “There are about 20 or so fundamental "hard problems"
(unresolvable paradoxes) in science (experiment based), and many more in
philosophy, metaphysics, and philosophy...some are new, most have been
around for many decades, and others are millennia old. MBT theory
solves all of them without adding any new assumptions or hard problems.”

Experimental Studies on a Single Microtubule: Investigation of Electronic Transport Properties

ABSTRACT

Using
nanotechnology we have studied electronic transport properties of a
single microtubule (MT) under direct current/bias (DC) and alternating
current (AC) of varying frequencies. Our study ranged from 10 K to the
room temperature. At specific, 1) spontaneous MT growth under AC signal
that led to Froelich Condensation, 2) ballistic electronic transport
under DC and AC signal, 3) ferroelectric MT properties under DC signal.
Applications of MT as a multilevel information processing and memory
device (beyond binary logic) will be discussed. I will present our
rigorous study to unravel the origin of room temperature coherent
transport in terms of band energy diagrams where point contacts between
valence and conduction band triggers transport of electrons/quasi
particles. Finally, I will describe challenges and resolution of
detection of MT topological qubits based on Hemchandra/Fibonacci MT
geometry at physiological temperature.

About the speaker: Dr.
Anirban Bandyopadhyay completed his doctorate in supramolecular
electronics at IACS, Kolkata, India, in 2005. He is a permanent
scientist in NIMS, Tsukuba Japan. In 2008, he and his colleagues
invented nano brain an artificial molecular processor that mimics a
fundamental hardware feature of our neural network. Apart from holding
executive positions in particular scientific organizations and editorial
board of information related journals, he is involved in setting up a
global platform for creating a super-intelligent molecular machine

Classical and Quantum Information in DNA

ABSTRACT


DNA
stores and replicates information. Special sequences of different
nucleic acids (adenine, cytosine, guanine, thymine) encode life's
blueprints. These nucleic acids can be divided into a classical part
(massive core) and a quantum part (electron shell and single protons).
The laws of quantum mechanics map the classical information (A,C,G,T)
onto the configuration of electrons and position of single protons.
Although DNA replication requires perfect copies of the classical
information, the core that constitutes this information does not
directly interact with the copying machine. Instead, only the quantum
degrees of freedom are measured. Thus successful copying requires a
correct translation of classical to quantum to classical information. It
has been shown [1] that the electronic system is well shielded from
thermal noise. This leads to entanglement inside the DNA helix. It is an
open question if this entanglement influences the genetic information
processing. In this talk I will discuss possible consequences of
entanglement for the information flow and the similarities and
differences between classical computing, quantum computing and DNA
information processing.

the speaker: Elisabeth Rieper - 2007: Diploma thesis in entanglement
theory under supervision of Reinhard Werner. Since 2008: PhD studies in
'Quantum Coherence in Biological Systems' at CQT Singapore under
supervision of Vlatko Vedral. This includes both finite dimensional
entanglement (spin-spin entanglement in the avian compass, arxiv:
0906.3725) as well as infinite dimensional entanglement (phonons in the
electronic degrees of freedom in DNA, arxiv: 1006.4053), exploiting
correlations for work extraction (The work value of information,
arXiv:0908.0424) and complexity theory.
Currently investigating the possible influence of entanglement on the information flow in biological systems.
