applications in industry, medicine and national security and discusses
potential future applications: cleaning waste water, capturing gas at
oil wells, treating flue gas at coal power stations, and improving
durability of asphalt on roads and highways. He gave his talk at the
Midwest launch of the Accelerator Stewardship Test Facility Pilot
Program, ( http://iarc.fnal.gov/pilot/
) held by Fermilab and Argonne on April 28, 2015. The program aims to
give industrial partners access to particle accelerator technologies,
test facilities and experts at Department of Energy national
laboratories as part DOE’s accelerator stewardship program.

with controversial and thought-provoking arguments about human

artificial intelligence, computer science, and psychology to inform his
philosophy, particularly his philosophies relating to evolutionary
biology and cognitive science.

Η πρώτη ανίχνευση της εξαιρετικά σπάνιας διάσπασης ενός υποατομικού σωματιδίου έρχεται να προστεθεί στις ανακαλύψεις που έχουν πετύχει μέχρι σήμερα οι επιστήμονες, με τη βοήθεια του Μεγάλου Επιταχυντή Αδρονίων στο CERN.
Πιο συγκεκριμένα, οι ερευνητικές ομάδες δύο πειραμάτων, του CMS και του LHCb, επιβεβαίωσαν από κοινού σε χθεσινό άρθρο τους στο περιοδικό Nature ότι για πρώτη φορά παρατήρησαν τη διάσπαση του «παράξενου» μεσονίου Β.

current status of the dark matter search and some new thoughts on the
nature of this mystery.

A signal of gamma rays has been observed
from the center of the Milky Way, and it may be the breakthrough that we
have long been waiting for. If these gamma-rays are in fact being
produced by the interactions of dark matter particles, they promise to
reveal much about this elusive substance, and may be a major step toward
identifying of the underlying nature of our universe's dark matter.

Στις 30 Ιουνίου ο Γιόχαν Ντίτριχ Βέρνερ, διοικητής του Κέντρου Αεροδιαστήματος της Γερμανίας, αναλαμβάνει επικεφαλής του Ευρωπαϊκού Οργανισμού Διαστήματος (ESA). Μιλώντας σε μεγάλο συνέδριο στο Κολοράντο ο Βέρνερ ανέφερε ότι ένα από τα βασικά του σχέδια είναι η δημιουργία μιας μόνιμης επιστημονικής βάσης στην αθέατη πλευρά της Σελήνης προκειμένου να διαδεχθεί τον Διεθνή Διαστημικό Σταθμό, ο οποίος σύμφωνα με τις διαστημικές υπηρεσίες θα μπορεί να λειτουργήσει ακόμη για ένα χρονικό διάστημα όχι μεγαλύτερο των 5-10 ετών.

Μια σπάνια διάσπαση σωματιδίων έλαβε χώρα στον LHC

Για πρώτη φορά οι επιστήμονες του CERN, μεταξύ των οποίων και Έλληνες φυσικοί, «είδαν» μια υπερβολικά σπάνια διάσπαση σωματιδίου, η οποία ποτέ δεν είχε παρατηρηθεί πειραματικά μέχρι σήμερα. Συγκεκριμένα, σε δημοσίευσή τους στην επιθεώρηση «Nature», οι ερευνητικές ομάδες των πειραμάτων CMS και LHCb περιγράφουν την πρώτη παρατήρηση της εξαιρετικά σπάνιας διάσπασης του σωματιδίου B0s σε δύο μιόνια. Η μελέτη αφορά δεδομένα που συλλέχθηκαν πριν σταματήσει την λειτουργία του ο Μεγάλος Επιταχυντής Αδρονίων (LHC) για αναβάθμιση η οποία ολοκληρώθηκε και ο επιταχυντής βρίσκεται εδώ και λίγες εβδομάδες εκ νέου σε λειτουργία.

Early treatment with a chemotherapy drug extends the lives of patients with advanced prostate cancer by nearly two years, a major study shows.

Docetaxel is normally given after hormone treatment has failed.
But results, to be presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology, will show earlier treatment can extend life expectancy from 43 to 65 months.

Doctors urged to stop 'over-treating'

Doctors' leaders have launched a major campaign to stop medics "over-treating" their patients in ways that do not help and could even harm them.

Writing in the British Medical Journal, they suggest some patients are given pills or have tests they do not need by doctors who feel under pressure to act.
They argue patients should feel able to discuss whether there are simpler, safer options that are right for them.
But experts warn they must not change treatment without medical advice.

The seasons appear to have a profound effect on how human genes work, according to scientists.

This may explain why some illnesses are aggravated in the winter, they say in Nature Communications.
They found genes involved with immunity - the body's defence against infection - were more active in cold months.
And while this helps fight off viruses such as flu, it may trigger or worsen conditions, such as arthritis, where the body attacks itself, they say.

The
Giant Impact theory is the leading explanation for the Moon's origin,
but mysteries remain in the conditions leading up to the event.
Collisions were common during the turbulent infancy of the Solar System
and led to a small set of terrestrial planets.

Dr. Quarles
presents a numerical model that considers the penultimate orbits of the
Solar System, when five terrestrial planets are present. From this
model, he indicates which starting parameters for Theia (the proto-Moon)
result in a late Giant Impact consistent with physical dating
constraints.

He also finds that the likely semimajor axis of
Theia, at the epoch when the simulations begin, depends on the assumed
mass ratio of the Earth-Moon progenitors (8/1, 4/1, or 1/1). The low
eccentricities of the resulting terrestrial planets are most commonly
produced when the progenitors have similar semimajor axes at the epoch
when the model starts.

Additionally, Dr. Quarles will show that
perturbations from the giant planets can affect the dynamical evolution
of the system leading to a late Moon Forming Giant Impact.

Brown
dwarfs are sub-stellar objects that occupy the region of parameter
space between gas giant planets, like Jupiter, and the smallest bona
fide stars. Since brown dwarfs never achieve sustained core hydrogen
fusion, they are destined to cool over cosmic timescales from thousands
to hundreds of degrees Kelvin. Observations and models of these strange
worlds reveal hydrogen-dominated atmospheres with a variety of trace
molecular species, as well as metal, dust, and salt condensates.

Recent
surveys and targeted observations have revealed that a substantial
fraction of brown dwarfs have a brightness that varies in time, with
some variations as large as 30% at certain wavelengths. In this
presentation, Dr. Robinson will review the atmospheric physics of brown
dwarfs and the current state of variability observations, and he will
discuss the various processes that likely cause brown dwarf variability,
which include dynamical effects, temporally- and spatially-varying
clouds, and associated atmospheric temperature fluctuations.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Liberia free of the Ebola virus, confirming that the country has had no new cases in 42 days.

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf told the BBC that Liberia had "crossed the Rubicon" and would be celebrating a concerted effort to stem the disease.
More than 4,700 deaths from Ebola have been recorded in Liberia, more than in any other affected country.
Neighbouring Guinea and Sierra Leone continue to fight the outbreak.
It has claimed over 11,000 lives across the region since last year.

WHO issues disease-naming advice to avoid offence

New human diseases should be given socially acceptable names which do not offend people and countries or mention animals, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said.

It has produced advice for scientists and the media on choosing names.
The WHO says Middle East Respiratory Syndrome and Spanish Flu are examples of what to avoid because they mention specific locations.
Instead, names should contain generic terms that are "easy to pronounce".
The WHO said several new human infectious diseases had emerged in recent years and some had stigmatised certain cultures, regions and economies.

Saturn's
ring system is an astrophysical disk that is neither light-years away
nor billions of years in the past. We can visit this disk at close range
and observe a number of phenomena that also operate in disks of other
kinds. As a result, we see small-scale processes that shape ring
texture, connect those processes to the bodies and structures that cause
them, and watch closely as the disk changes with time.

We will
discuss recent Cassini observations that elucidate disk processes
including 1) "self-gravity wakes" and "spiral density waves," both of
which were originally proposed for galaxies but are observed with
exquisite precision in Saturn's rings, 2) "propeller" features caused by
100-meter to km-sized moonlets embedded in the disk; these are the
first objects ever to have their orbits tracked while embedded in a
disk, rather than orbiting in free space, and hold the potential of
deepening our understanding of planetary migration, and 3) irregular
edge shapes in the gaps opened up by larger moons (10 km and more),
which may hold clues to angular momentum transport.

Σε μια σοκολάτα που δεν λιώνει στη ζέστη, αλλά και σε μια σειρά νέα φαρμακευτικά προϊόντα, θα μπορούσε ενδεχομένως να οδηγήσει η ανακάλυψη αμερικανών επιστημόνων.

Συγκεκριμένα, γενετιστές από το Τμήμα Γεωργικών Επιστημών του Πολιτειακού Πανεπιστημίου της Πενσιλβάνια εντόπισαν στο βούτυρο κακάο το γονίδιο TcSAD1, το οποίο φάνηκε να ρυθμίζει τον μηχανισμό που το κάνει να λιώνει.

Πριν από μερικά χρόνια δεν θα το πίστευε κανείς, κι όμως σήμερα υπάρχει πλέον ένα ηλεκτρονικό μικροσκόπιο με ανάλυση που πλησιάζει τις ατομικές διαστάσεις. Ομως ο ρομποτικός εξερευνητής Curiosity της NASA αποκάλυψε ότι έστω και για λίγο ο Αρης αποκτά μια γαλαζωπή απόχρωση.

The Plasmodium falciparum parasite is the most deadly of all malaria parasites

A trial of a malaria vaccine that targets the most dangerous variety of parasite that causes the disease has shown some positive early results.

The vaccine, developed at Oxford University, was 67% effective in a study of 121 men in Kenya, it found.
Encouraging results have now been recorded for two malaria vaccines, after 20 years of research.

Starspots and the dynamic evolution of hot-Jupiter exoplanet systems

When
a hot-Jupiter transits its host star and crosses an active region there
is a possibility that it will occult a starspot. When this happens a
starspot anomaly is usually seen in the resulting transit lightcurve.
Generally viewed as a nuisance, the most common approach is to remove
the affected data points before performing an analysis to determine the
lightcurve properties. However, when a starspot anomaly is found in
transit photometry it can allow a wealth of information to be
discovered. Apart from determining the physical properties of the
starspot (such as position, size and temperature) if a starspot anomaly
is found in two sets of transit photometry and is due to the same
starspot it is then possible to determine the stellar rotation period at
the given latitude of the starspot. It is also possible to measure the
sky-projected stellar obliquity of the system which can then begin to
shed some light on the primary mechanism of the dynamical evolution of
the system.

The WHO has urged Ebola survivors to be even more cautious during sexual contact to ensure the virus is not passed on to their partners.

The warning comes after a survivor was found to have traces of Ebola in his semen almost six months after recovery.
This is some 90 days later than previously documented.
It is unclear whether Ebola can still be spread at this point. But officials have launched further investigations to evaluate the risks.

The Ebola virus has been detected in the eye of a US doctor who had already recovered from the illness.

The medic, who caught the bug while working in Sierra Leone, had blurred eyesight and pain two months after being declared Ebola-free.
Scientists say his eye infection presents no risk to the public.
But reporting in the New England Journal of Medicine they warn that research is needed to see if Ebola can also linger in other parts of the body.

Inflammatory reaction

Patients with Ebola are generally discharged once tests show the virus is no longer present in blood. At this point, experts say, it cannot be spread to members of the general public.
But there have been suggestions the virus could live on in certain bodily fluids - for example in the semen of survivors some weeks after recovery.
Now a team, including scientists from Emory University School of Medicine, say it could also persist in the eye and lead to further damage.
Their 43-year-old patient recovered from a serious Ebola infection that needed weeks of intensive care.
But shortly after being discharged, he had a burning sensation in his eyes and suffered worsening blurry vision.
Tests showed the fluid in his left eye had live Ebola virus.

IBM's Watson supercomputer to speed up cancer care

IBM's supercomputer Watson will be used to make decisions about cancer care in 14 hospitals in the US and Canada, it has been announced.

Using computers to trawl through vast amounts of medical data speeds up the diagnosis process.
The system will help assess individual tumours and suggest which drug should be used to target them.
Doctors have welcomed the new computer which will learn from each case it examines.

is the most beautiful planet in our Solar System. Famous for its bright
yet ethereal rings, the gas giant has over sixty natural satellites in
orbit around it -- and one artificial satellite: NASA's Cassini
spacecraft, which provides many of the results and images that will be
showcased in this talk. We shall explore the weather observed in the
atmosphere of Saturn, the curious structures that develop within the
rings, and its wide variety of moons -- from smog-shrouded Titan,
two-sided Iapetus, to busy Prometheus, and the icy plumes erupting from
frozen Enceladus.
