The Urban Species: How Domesticated Humans Evolved

Modern
humans are building megacities – and networks of megacities – at an
unprecedented scale. Annalee Newitz compares today’s urbanization
phenonmenon to that of the Neolithic period roughly 9,000 years ago,
when humans first began living in sedentary communities. That shift
prompted massive social, biological, and technological changes, creating
the first “domesticated” humans. Using history as a guide, Newitz
explores the evolutionary upheaval that modern humans may have set in
motion, and what it might mean for us as a civilization.

Annalee
Newitz is the technology culture editor at Ars Technica. She holds a PhD
in English and American Studies from UC Berkeley. Her most recent book
is "Scatter, Adapt, and Remember: How Humans Will Survive a Mass
Extinction".

Although
much of the Big Bang Theory is widely accepted to be true, it only gets
us part of the way there. Observable truths such as the CMB and the
flatness of our universe reveal that there is no way the universe has
been expanding at a constant rate since its beginning. It turns out
Cosmic Inflation solves the Big Bang's major problems quite well. So
well in fact, that we might not even need a Big Bang at all!

Έχουμε ήδη μελετήσει τους ορισμούς της επιτάχυνσης και των σχετικών με αυτήν ιδεών, αλλά τώρα θα πρέπει να μελετήσουμε τις ιδιότητες των δυνάμεων και το παρόν Κεφάλαιο, σε αντίθεση με τα προηγούμενα, δεν θα επιχειρήσει να είναι τόσο ακριβές, εξαιτίας της πολύπλοκης φύσης των δυνάμεων.Για να ξεκινήσουμε με μια συγκεκριμένη δύναμη, ας θεωρήσουμε την οπισθέλκουσα ενός αερο­πλάνου, το οποίο κινείται μέσα σε μια αέρια μάζα.Ποιός είναι ο νόμος που διέπει τη δύναμη αυτή ; (Σίγουρα, θα υπάρχει κάποιος νόμος για κάθε δύναμη· αυτό που έχουμε να κάνουμε είναι να τον βρούμε!) Πολύ δύσκολα θα ισχυριστεί κάποιος ότι ο νόμος για μια τέτοια δύναμη θα είναι κάτι το απλό.

four years of high-energy particle demolition inside the detectors of
the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), are physicists on the verge of
announcing one of the most significant discoveries of our time? If
you’ve seen this morning’s headlines, then you’d think the answer is a
huge yes. But in typical quantum physics style, we’ll have to wait a
little longer for definitive proof for the elusive Higgs boson
On
Wednesday (July 4), scientists heading two major experiments at the LHC
plan to announce their most recent findings at a physics conference in
Australia with accompanying meetings in Geneva, Switzerland. What’s
more, senior scientists at European Organization for Nuclear Research
(CERN) are hinting that there is strong evidence in their data that
suggests the Higgs boson exists.
For the last year or so there have
been “hints” of a Higgs detection, then those hints turned into
“potential evidence.” Now, will we finally get word of a bona fide
discovery?
“I agree that any reasonable outside observer would say,
‘It looks like a discovery,'” CERN physicist John Ellis told The
Associated Press. “We’ve discovered something which is consistent with
being a Higgs.”
The Higgs boson is the last piece of the physics
Standard Model, a collection of theories that underpin all modern
physics. The Higgs particle is theorized to mediate mass — like a photon
(also a boson) mediates the electromagnetic force, i.e., light — and
creates the “Higgs field” that must pervade the entire Universe,
endowing matter with mass.
If the LHC didn’t detect signs of the
Higgs particle, its non-discovery would turn modern physics on its head.
But physicists are an inquisitive bunch, so a non-discovery would be
just as exciting (if not more so) than a discovery. But for all the
Higgs doubters out there, it’s looking more and more likely the Higgs
does exist and the Standard Model is as robust as physicists always
thought.

The Standard Model of particle physics is a theory concerning the
electromagnetic, weak, and strong nuclear interactions, which mediate the
dynamics of the known subatomic particles. It was developed throughout the
latter half of the 20th century, as a collaborative effort of scientists around
the world. The current formulation was finalized in the mid-1970s upon
experimental confirmation of the existence of quarks. Since then, discoveries of
the top quark (1995), the tau neutrino (2000), and more recently the Higgs boson
(2013), have given further credence to the Standard Model. Because of its
success in explaining a wide variety of experimental results, the Standard Model
is sometimes regarded as a "theory of almost everything".

Scientists
at CERN have been exploring the high energy frontier with the Large
Hadron Collider since March 2010. The substantial dataset accumulated
thus far, albeit at lower energy than initially foreseen, already
yielded a Nobel prize award for the discovery of the Higgs Boson.
The
new boson, discovered in 2012 by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, has
been shown to behave very much like the long-sought-after Higgs Boson,
and hence it completes the discovery of the Standard Model of Particle
Physics. Remarkably, no other deviations from the Standard Model have
been found, neither in precision measurements nor in direct searches for
new particles. The LHC will resume operations in 2015, after a 2-year
shutdown, with increased center of mass energy, and thus, with increased
potential for new discoveries. In this talk, Joao Guimaraes de Costa
will review recent measurements at the LHC, with a focus on the study of
the properties of the newly discovered boson, and will briefly discuss
what we expect to learn from the future LHC data.

The Standard Model (SM) is a description of nature in terms of fundamental particles and their interactions. It has been developed over a number of decades, and its development has been guided both by theoretical predictions and experimental discoveries. The SM encompasses three of the four fundamental forces of nature: electromagnetism, the strong interaction and the weak interaction. Apart from gravity, the interactions described by the SM are responsible for all aspects of daily life. Electromagnetism describes the interaction of electrons with nuclei and is thus responsible for all of chemistry and biology. The strong force describes the interactions within the nucleus. The weak force provides a description of radioactivity and nuclear fusion, which powers the stars. The SM describes nature using a mathematical formalism known as quantum field theory.

captured immediately before and during the umbra phase of the total
solar eclipse on March 9, 2016 reveals a series ofl planetary objects to
the upper right of photos. The images were captured while on an Alaska
Airlines flight 870 from Anchorage to Honolulu. The images suggest the
presence of a planetary body and moon complex (Nibiru-Planet X) in
proximity to the sun.

The first image was captured 2 minutes prior to totality and the remaining images were captured during the totality phase.

Skytv
revealed an amazing capture of a second sun in retrograde orbit around
our Sun. The credible TV image was captured on March 1, 2016 and shows a
massive planetary entity behind the clouds, therefore disproving the
lens flare theory, and suggesting a genuine celestial presence.

The
Mariana Trench or Marianas Trench is the deepest part of the world's
oceans. It is located in the western Pacific Ocean, to the east of the
Mariana Islands. The trench is about 2,550 kilometres (1,580 mi) long
but has an average width of only 69 kilometres (43 mi). It reaches a
maximum-known depth of 10,994 m (± 40 m) or 6.831 mi (36,070 ± 131 ft)
at the Challenger Deep, a small slot-shaped valley in its floor, at its
southern end, although some unrepeated measurements place the deepest
portion at 11.03 kilometres (6.85 mi).

At the bottom of the
trench the water column above exerts a pressure of 1,086 bars (15,750
psi), over 1000 times the standard atmospheric pressure at sea level. At
this pressure the density of water is increased by 4.96%, making 95
litres of water under the pressure of the Challenger Deep contain the
same mass as 100 litres at the surface. The temperature at the bottom is
1 to 4 °C.

The trench is not the part of the seafloor closest to
the center of the Earth. This is because the Earth is not a perfect
sphere; its radius is about 25 kilometres (16 mi) less at the poles than
at the equator. As a result, parts of the Arctic Ocean seabed are at
least 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) closer to the Earth's center than the
Challenger Deep seafloor.

Xenophyophores have been found in the
trench by Scripps Institution of Oceanography researchers at a record
depth of 10.6 km (6.6 mi) below the sea surface. On 17 March 2013,
researchers reported data that suggested microbial life forms thrive
within the trench.

Television’s channels NTV-1 (formerly the Public Channel) and NTV-3
(formerly the Media Channel) are now in high definition. NTV-2 (formerly
the Education Channel) is a standard digital feed. NTV-1 provides
real-time coverage of NASA missions, events and special programming.
NTV-2 provides real-time coverage of NASA missions, education content
and special programming in standard definition. NTV-3 provides mission
coverage, news conferences and relevant video and audio materials to
local, national and international news-gathering organizations.

All NASA Television channels are available on Satellite AMC-18C. Specific parameters for each channel are listed below.

NASA’s
Live Interactive Media Service (LIMS) is KU-Band service. KU-Band
parameters are provided prior to each event. NASA Television will
schedule each LIMS event on a satellite in proximity of AMC-18 whenever
possible.

News networks, their reporters, and other broadcast
media organizations must tune their satellite receivers to the NTV-3 to
ensure reception of clean feeds for all mission coverage, news
conferences, and other agency distributed news and information.NASA TV
is available in continental North America, Alaska and Hawaii on AMC-18C.
A Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) compliant Integrated Receiver Decoder
(IRD) is needed for reception. Below are parameters for each channel:

Downlink Frequency: 3760 MHz
Downlink Polarity: Vertical

Anyone
who expresses a more definitive response to the question is claiming
access to knowledge not based on empirical foundations. This remarkably
persistent way of thinking, common to most religions and some branches
of philosophy, has failed badly in past efforts to understand, and
thereby predict the operations of the universe and our place within it.

To
assert that the universe has a purpose implies the universe has intent.
And intent implies a desired outcome. But who would do the desiring?
And what would a desired outcome be? That carbon-based life is
inevitable? Or that sentient primates are life's neurological pinnacle?
Are answers to these questions even possible without expressing a
profound bias of human sentiment? Of course humans were not around to
ask these questions for 99.9999% of cosmic history. So if the purpose of
the universe was to create humans then the cosmos was embarrassingly
inefficient about it.

Administrator Charlie Bolden was back on Capitol Hill during the week
of March 13 for more Congressional hearings on the agency’s $19 billion
dollar Fiscal Year 2017 budget proposal. On Tuesday, Bolden testified
before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice,
Science and Related Agencies, and on Thursday, the administrator
responded to questions from the House Science Subcommittee on Space. The
budget proposed by President Obama will fund NASA initiatives to send
American astronauts to Mars in the 2030s, expand our knowledge about our
universe, and improve the quality of life on Earth, as well as the
health of the planet itself. Also, New crew launches to ISS, More
science on next ISS supply mission, NASA Women in Action, NASA radios on
European Mars mission and more!

outer reaches of our Solar System are home to hundreds of thousands of
small icy worlds. Their present orbits are a sculpted signature of the
early migrations of the giant planets, particularly Neptune. Yet the
faintness and highly eccentric orbits of most of these worlds mean only a
tiny fraction of them have yet been discovered. With the Outer Solar
System Origins Survey on CFHT, we are discovering up to five hundred new
outer Solar System objects, with exquisitely well-determined orbital
parameters. Our complementary Large Program on Gemini North is observing
the brightest of our discoveries in the optical and infrared with
unprecedented precision, providing information on the ices, silicates
and organic compounds on the surfaces of these small worlds. This
colourful map of the structure of the outer Solar System is providing
new constraints on Neptune's migration.
