In
the year 1916, Albert Einstein theoretically showed that his equations
(which describe the very nature of gravity) admit wave-like solutions.
Gravitational waves, as Einstein first described, are the ripples of the
space-time that are generated if the gravitational field of an object
changes: just like an oscillating charge produces electromagnetic waves
oscillations of a mass would produce gravitational waves. Almost hundred
years after Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves,
the two LIGO detectors made their first direct detection of
gravitational waves from an event that took place about 1.3 billion
years ago. Based on the observed properties of the detected signal it is
clear beyond any reasonable doubt that these waves were produced by the
merger of two heavy black holes. In this talk, I would present a
discussion on the observation of this event by LIGO, our current
understanding of its properties and the science it offers.
